Hooks tops Notre Dame, Kysre & Esmery lead WVU

Ohio 86 - Notre Dame 85

Behind 32 points and eight rebounds from CeCe Hooks, the Bobcats of Ohio toppled an ACC opponent.

A mid-major that competes in the Mid American conference, Ohio stepped up to the plate and hit the ball out of the ball park at the bottom of the ninth as it defeated visiting Notre Dame. Ohio was up by 11 points at halftime, holding a 41-30 lead. Notre Dame roared back outscoring the Bobcats 35-21 in the third quarter as it took a 65-62 lead going into the fourth quarter.

"We didn't give up, even when we went down," Hooks said. "I am so proud of the team for that." Hooks scored the team's first seven points of the game as she found herself in the midst of a scoring war with Notre Dame's Dara Mabrey, who finished the day with 34 points. Mabrey also drained seven-of-14 three-pointers as well.

The fourth quarter comeback from Ohio in the fourth quarter wasn't easy. With 6:03 remaining Madelyn Westbeld's layup put Notre Dame ahead 77-70. From there Ohio went on an 8-0 run, as forward Erica Johnson posted four of those points to put the Bobcats ahead 78-77 at 4:39. That lead wasn't long as Notre Dame snatched the lead (79-78) at 4:21 when Anaya Peoples drained a jump shot assisted by Destinee Walker.

With Notre Dame ahead 81-79 at the 3:40 mark, Hooks scored six of the final seven points for Ohio as it held off its opponent for the 86-85 win. Ohio's defense held up strong forcing 18 turnovers while its offense only turned over the ball on 11 occasions.

Johnson of Ohio, followed up her season opening 31 points against Liberty with 24 points against Notre Dame. She shot 8-17 and tallied five assists to go along with four rebounds. Johnson also shared the team lead with Jasmine Hale, collecting two steals. Peoples of Notre Dame put up a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Walker scored 16 as well for the Irish.

West Virginia 83 - Fresno State 62

Kysre Gondrezick lived up to all the preseason hype we've been giving her as the potent scorer racked up 23 points, shooting 5-9 from three-point land in an 83-62 win over Fresno State at South Point Arena in Las Vegas, Nov. 27.

The Mountaineers more than survived the dangerous trio of Hanna and Haley Cavinder along with Maddi Utti that scored 19, 15 and 12 points respectively. West Virginia dominated second chance points opportunities outscoring Fresno State 27-8 in that category. WVU outrebounded its opponent 54-24 which was an obstacle that Fresno State could not overcome.

Sophomore Esmery Martinez guided West Virginia with 15 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. She had a complete game with 14 points, four assists and two blocked shots. Kirsten Deans and Madisen Smith also scored in double figures for West Virginia. The two had 15 and 12 points respectively.

(25) Arizona State 49 - Virginia Commonwealth 40

Arizona State (2-0) grounded a strong offense by winning an ugly contest where both teams struggled to score from the field. Virginia Commonwealth (1-1) shot 9-42, adding up to 21 percent. The victor Arizona State shot 15-65 which was good for 23 percent.

Eboni Walker posted her second double-double of the season. The 5-11 forward had 13 points and 13 rebounds to go along with three steals and two blocks. Taya Hanson also pitched in with a team leading 14 points.

VCU was led by senior guard Madison Hattix-Covington's game high 16 points on 4-9 shooting. The rest of her teammates made a combined five shots in all.
