Merritt takes over, Florida eliminates 49ers from WNIT

Charlotte went into the fourth quarter with a 48-46 lead against Florida but the Gators inched past the 49ers to take a 66-65 win in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament, March 19.

Senior guard Kiara Smith did her usual, scoring 21 points with seven steals, six rebounds and four assists. She got a big performance from her teammate six-foot-three freshman forward Jordyn Merritt who posted a giant sized double-double.

Merritt had her most productive game of the season with 17 points, 18 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. She entered the game with averages of 5.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Merritt scored in double-digits for the fourth time this year and grabbed more than 10 rebounds for the first time.

Behind Merritt's performance, Florida outrebounded Charlotte 44-27. Charlotte was led as usual by five-foot-eight senior guard Octavia Jett-Wilson's 26 points. She knocked down three-of-four threes but struggled from two-point territory, making just five of her 18 two-point shots.

Charlotte got 12 points and seven rebounds from freshman forward Molina Williams. She also entered the game at 5.5 points per game, scoring in double figures for just the fourth time this season. Junior center Jazmin Harris just missed a double-double for the 49ers with 10 points and nine rebounds off of the bench.

Tulane's third quarter drops Illinois State

Tulane outscored Illinois State 23-8 in the third quarter to win 75-67 in WNIT first round action. Senior guard Arsula Clark had her second highest scoring output as she led Tulane with 21 points. Clark is a five-foot-nine senior from Miami who is averaging 12 points per game. Against Illinois State she made eight-of-14 shots and dished out five assists.

Jerkaila Jordan is the team's leading scorer for the season, averaging 16 points per game. She scored 13 points on five-of-seven shots. Salma Bates and Krystal Freeman posted 12 and 11 points respectively for the Green Wave.

Illinois State outscored Tulane in every quarter except for the third. Junior guard Mary Crompton led the Redbirds with 19 points. It was her first time in double figures in the month of March. She averages 11 points per game but hadn't scored 10 points or more since Feb. 25. Crompton shot the lights out from three, nailing five-of-10 triples. She also led her team with three steals. Iowa State forward DeAnna Wilson led her team with 14 rebounds, while scoring 10 points.

Austin charges Ole Miss past Samford

Ole Miss dominated Samford from start to finish in its first round WNIT match up. After leading 16-9 in the first, the Rebels halftime lead was 38-17.

Six-foot-five junior forward Shakira Austin was too much for Samford to overcome. Ole Miss' leading lady made 11-of-15 shots on her way to 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Junior guard Donnetta Johnson supported Austin with 10 points. She also had four rebounds and three assists. Point guard Mimi Reid dished out a game high seven assists with only two turnovers. It was the senior's seventh game of the season with seven or more assists.

Samford guard Andrea Cournoyer who averages 18 points per game was the lone player on her team in double figures. The five-foot-four guard scored 17 points but had one of her worst shooting nights of the season, going seven-for-20 from the field. Cournoyer also led her team with eight rebounds and four steals.

Dickey leads Delaware's route of Fordham

Delaware pounded on Fordham behind the talents of Jasmine Dickey. The junior guard from Baltimore, who averages 23 points and eight rebounds and two steals per game, played up to her level which was good enough to lead Delaware to a 77-49 win.

Dickey scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and stole the ball four times. Delaware also got a strong performance from forward Ty Battle, who scored 14 points and snagged eight boards.

Fordham was led in scoring by forward Megan Jonassen's 16 points. Forward Kaitlyn Downey led Fordham with 13 rebounds and five assists to go with nine points.

Dickey's shooting performance of 10-for-19 tallied up to 52.6 percent. It marked her first time making over 40 percent of her shots since Jan. 30.
