Patterson drops 30, Kelly debuts strong

Ladies and gentlemen the basketball season has gotten off to a fun start. Here's a look at some of the games on opening day and the top performers that made noise around the nation. Stay tuned to this series throughout the season as we highlight the best in women's basketball.

Houston 97 - Oklahoma 85

Junior guard Britney Onyeje scored 23 points after hitting five three pointers to lead Houston to a 97-85 win over host Oklahoma in the season opening win, Wednesday, Nov. 25.

The Cougars had three others in double digits as Julia Blackshell-Fair scored 16 points, scoring half of her points at the free-throw line where she went 8-11. Dymond Gladney shot 6-12 on her way to 13 points and a game high seven assists. Laila Blair came off of the bench to post 13 points in only 11 minutes of action.

Oklahoma found its way to the free-throw line where it connected on 32-of-39 free shots, but the Sooners had a destructive night at the three-point line shooting 3-15. Star guard Taylor Robinson hit all of Oklahoma's threes shooting 3-8 from the three-point line. She struggled going 3-10 overall with 13 points. Her teammate Madi Williams led the way for Oklahoma with 25 points.

Highly touted transfer Daphane White had a bit of a rough day going 1-5 with five fouls but she did collect five rebounds and a game two blocked shots in 17 minutes as a reserve.

Kentucky 86 - Murray State 60

Chasity Patterson kicked off the season with a sonic boom as she exploded for 30 points in Kentucky's first win of the season, 86-60 over Murray State. She shot 8-13 from the field and 12-13 from the free-throw line and flirted with a triple double, collecting eight steals and six rebounds. The 5-5 guard averaged 11.4 points and 2.2 rebounds last season.

Kentucky jump out to a 30-14 lead after the first and led 51-26 at the half. Center Olivia Owens led Kentucky with nine rebounds to go along with seven points in 18 minutes of action off of the bench. UK's Treasure Hunt led all reserves with 12 points on 5-10 shooting. Murray State got a double-double from freshman forward Katelyn Young who scored 14 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.

North Carolina 90 - Radford 61

Freshman point guard Deja Kelly lived up to the hype in her North Carolina debut. The 5-8, San Antonio native led UNC to a 90-61 win behind her 19 points, four rebounds and three assists. She only had one turnover. Five other Tarblooders posted double digits led by Petra Holesinska (14), Alyssa Ustby (13), Kennedy Todd-Williams (12), Janelle Bailey (10) and Anya Poole (10). Todd-Williams also posted nine rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block.

Radford struggled with 15 turnovers versus UNC's five. Radford connected on only 31 percent of its shots. The Highlanders were led in scoring by Tina Lindenfield with 13 points.

Georgia Tech 62 - Georgia State 38

Italian senior forward Lorela Cubaj led Georgia Tech with 14 rebounds, four blocks and four assists as her team won the battle of Atlanta in a 62-38 route over Georgia State. Cubaj also pitched in eight points to in the victory that was led in scoring by junior Yellow Jackets guard Lotta-Maj Lahtinen of Helsinki with her 14 points.

Tech gave Georgia State an international beating as the Panthers made only 14-of-60 shots, good for 23 percent shooting. Georgia State shot a paltry 18 percent from three (4-22). Lahtinen posted a double-double with 10 points. Sarah Bates and Loyal McQueen both scored 12 points each.
