Tonight, Fresno State takes on West Virginia in the season opener for both teams. West Virginia was 17-12 in 2019-20, in a year where junior forward Kysre Gondrezick led the team in scoring with an average of 15.3 points per game. She hopes to have as hot of a start this season as she did the last where she scored 20 points or more the first four games of the campaign.

Fresno State has a more than potent three-headed monster as it looks to build upon its 25-7 season from a year ago. Madi Utti joins forces with sisters Haley and Hanna Cavinder as they averaged a combined 46 points per game. Haley was narrowly the team's leading scorer at 16 points per game, while Hanna, who averaged 15.7 points, led the team with assists with 118. Haley finished second with 117 assists.

Utti a forward complimented the two guards with an average of 15.9 points while leading the team with a .515 shot percentage and pulling down 8.9 rebounds per game. West Virginia's top rebounder Kari Niblack returns this season after averaging 6.9 rebounds to go along with 10.3 points per game. Last year she had eight games with 10 rebounds or more. The Mountaineers also expect big things from 6-1 freshman guard Taziah Jenks. The Louisville, Kentucky native is a capable scorer and rebounder.

Notre Dame at Ohio

Ohio looks to improve to 2-0 when it hosts Notre Dame. The Bobcats held off Liberty in its season opener on November, 25 with a 76-72 win. Forward Erica Johnson had a strong season debut with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Over her career, Johnson has proven to be reliable with averages of 16.4 points and seven boards per contest in 61 total games.

Ohio also got an 18-point seven-rebound contribution from senior guard CeCe Hooks who also has been a model of consistency over her career with an average 16.5 points over 96 career games. Notre Dame starts its season with five players returning who averaged at least 10 points per game. Destinee Walker led all players at 14.5 points per game, followed by Sam Brunelle's 13.9 and Katlyn Gilbert's 13.6.

Anaya Peoples (12.6) and Mikayla Vaughn (1o.6) were the only players for Notre Dame who averaged double figures that shot over 40 percent. Vaughn led the team with an impressive 58 shooting percent from the field. The 6-3 senior center with a career shooting clip of 56 percent also averaged career bests in rebounding and blocks when she pulled down seven rebounds and swatted 1.55 shots per game.

Virginia Commonwealth had a more high scoring season opener with its 87-79 victory over Saint Mary's at Tempe Arizona. New Zealand native and 6-0 guard Tera Reed, hit three-of-four three-pointers and knocked down nine-of-10 free-throws on her way to 22 points. Canadian freshman Sarah Te-Biasu also shot 3-4 from three, scoring 19 points. Virginia Commonwealth got 17 points and six rebounds from the Richmond native and hometown product senior Taya Robinson.

The trio of Reed, Te-Biasu and Robinson combined for 58 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists. VCU also got a lift from Madison Hattix-Covington's 10 points and four rebounds. The Rams shot the ball well from three, going 9-20 (40 percent) from three. They shot 47 percent overall.
