Why Westbrook Winning a Title Will Be a Miracle in Itself

With the Playoffs reaching boiling point, why wasn't the OKC "Super-Team" able to make a deeper run than the first round?

Why couldn't the Thunder win more games than when Westbrook was there on his own?

At the start of the season, I saw that the Oklahoma City Thunder MIGHT have found an answer for Kevin Durant. They MAY challenge the Golden State dynasty in the Playoffs. They COULD rival the new Big 3 in Oakland. What transpired, was that every player that has left the Thunder has gotten BETTER, and it is all down to one man. Number 0. Now don't get me wrong, before the Warriors eventual title win with Kevin Durant, I thought that OKC were prime to make another title run. I thought that this was the new Big 3. I thought that the Miami dynasty with James, Wade, and Bosh was in jeopardy. I thought the West was finally making a comeback and taking away the East dominance from LeBron. I wasn't to be. Harden left for Houston and is an MVP candidate, Durant at Golden State and is a Champion and Finals MVP, and Westbrook is chasing rebounds and solo accomplishments.

The OKC Big 3 were going to be great. What went wrong?

Left to Right: Westbrook, Harden and Durant

In the years from '07 to '09, the Thunder won in the draft by taking three eventual All-Star caliber players, of whom would make a Finals run in 2012. Then, two of the three stars left. To become better players and have another chance to win a championship. One has already done it. The other is on his way to. Where does that leave the one who stayed? Chasing rebounds and personal accolades. Now, not saying that the only person in history to average back-to-back triple double seasons isn't impressive or hard to accomplish it is extremely hard to do. However, when there are front office personnel that have worked extremely hard to bring you the pieces to build a championship team, to make a very deep run in the playoffs, to finally hush critics, to bring you the first chance at glory SINCE two stars left, but you win the same amount of games, barely scrape into the playoffs and get knocked out by an inexperienced Utah team, with the REAL Rookie of the Year should I say, then the problem isn't around you.

IT. IS. YOU.

However many triple doubles you get, however many records you break, however many times you don't WANT to bring in star players that will help you to a title, your stubbornness will be your downfall. To bring in a Star Scoring Specialist and a 10x All Star and Scoring Champion to your team, they want to play with the MVP, they want to win a championship. When all that transpires, it is a repeat season with extras. Carmelo averaged the lowest points per game total of his career, where Paul George wasn't even close to his All Star status. Westbrook has also come out and said that he doesn't recruit stars to his team and makes the argument that "Winning a Championship. Beat that pitch" is a good enough reason for players to join him. That's like the kid with the ball making the argument that other kids can only play unless he goes home with the ball. One MVP trophy doesn't mean that you, yourself, can take a TEAM to a getting a championship. The team's FIRST championship, that you will be immortalised for, by the way. But, (and it is a BIG but), until you get out of this tunnel vision of MVPs, historic seasons and SOLO wins, then it will not be any different for you in the seasons to come. It will be the same story. Repeated. Forever. Historic regular season, but one of THE greatest players, to never win a ring, and it will all be on YOU.
