When Sporting Heroes Fail
Setting the wrong example
Last month, Australian sports fans were shocked by an event involving some of their heroes.
The incident concerns five players in the Australian Football League (AFL). The AFL is, for those who do not know it, Australia's code. On par with the NFL in the United States or the Premier League across Europe, it is a religion for many Australians.
If you have never watched a game of AFL, do yourself a favour and watch one. It is like soccer with balls and NFL but without all the “pussy padding” that they have.
Every winter, many Australians embrace their love for the game and its players. They are held in godlike status.
Five Sydney Swans players took women back to the team hotel after a night of drinking. Victoria Police's Sex Crimes Squad started looking into a woman's report of sexual assault at the hotel. Three women are at the center of the inquiry. Police haven't laid charges yet, but the cultural impact is already being felt.
The Sydney Swans stood down all five players for the remainder of the 2026 season and finals series. Club leaders said the suspensions were a fast response to team behavior rules. The issues included staying out late, drinking, and bringing guests to the hotel. This decision was separate from the ongoing criminal investigation.
The Sydney Swans have about 1.3 million supporters. They also have more than 75,000 official club members. They are the most widely supported AFL team in the country. They have held the top spot on the supporter ladder for 20 straight years.
The impact of this wayward behaviour has been immense. Major sponsors have paused or suspended promotions involving the players.
Over the last 16 years, many AFL players have faced charges. These include sexual assault, rape, and indecent assault. The league has given different penalties for these offenses. Not one player has been convicted.
This shows that the lack of respect for women is a concern for everyone, especially in sports. Players have been suspended and had contracts canceled for inappropriate behavior toward women.
It will be decided if the players face charges for sexual crimes against one or more females. These players are heroes to many young fans. They shouldn't make it seem okay to hire adult entertainers or take drugs off women's bodies.
The AFL hasn’t put a strict policy in place. Players won’t be automatically stood down if they are charged with crimes against women. As a result, many players don’t fully focus on respecting women.
This incident hasn’t helped the AFL promote the women’s game, the AFLW. As one commentator put it, “the AFL talks a lot about wanting women and girls to feel that football belongs to them." It’s not just about how women are talked about and treated. It also covers how the industry reacts to serious allegations against women.
In our culture, sports stars worldwide are treated as heroes. They have privileges heaped on them. Often, their antisocial behaviour is overlooked.
We have to do better. We cannot have young players mimicking the despicable behaviour of their heroes. Most players set an outstanding example. So they should. They get paid enough and have privileges that many people can only dream about.
When those who step out of line, there should be no discussion but swift and harsh penalties applied. They are heroes to many kids. It's important to teach that bad behavior is never okay, no matter who you are.
