What Went Wrong: 78 Years
The Cleveland Guardians' championship drought extends for another year following their ALCS defeat

October 4, 1948. On that day, the then-named Cleveland Indians were in Fenway facing off against the Boston Red Sox in a one-game tiebreaker for the American League pennant; a game that was needed due to the Indians and Red Sox finishing with identical 96-58 records. Cleveland took it to the Sox (who were American League Champions two years prior), 8-3, winning the pennant and going on to face the Boston Braves in the World Series.
October 11, 1948. A week after the playoff, Cleveland found themselves up 3-2 in the Series against the Braves. Game Six in Boston. Cleveland managed to win it, 4-3, and with that, they were World Champions for only the second time in franchise history--their only other title came all the way back in 1920.
October 2, 1954. Six years after their championship win, Cleveland was back in the World Series, this time against the New York Giants, who were also on the hard luck side. On that date, however, Cleveland was defeated by the Giants, 7-4, in Game Four of that Series, and that completed a four-game sweep for the Giants.
October 28, 1995. After a 41-year drought, Cleveland finally made it back to the playoffs as champions of the American League Central, their first-ever division title since Divisional Play began in 1969. The 144-game season saw Cleveland win 100 games total, oust the Red Sox in the Division Series, and eliminate the Seattle Mariners in the ALCS to win the pennant for the first time since 1954. On that exact date, it was Game Six of the Series, and they were defeated 1-0 by the team they beat in 1948: the Braves.
October 26, 1997. Cleveland was back in the World Series for the second time in three years, and all they did was defeat the then-defending champion Yankees (ALDS) and the Baltimore Orioles (ALCS). This time, they faced the Florida Marlins, who were only in their fifth season of play. After six games, it ended up coming down to a seventh game, and that game ended up going into extra innings. The Marlins had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th, and Edgar Renteria's single won it for the Marlins.
November 2, 2016. On that Wednesday evening, Cleveland was playing Game Seven of the World Series. They tied it up with a big homer in the eighth, but they ended up in extra innings, with the 10th inning starting after a brief rain delay. Cleveland ended up behind 8-6, and while they did cut their deficit in half, they would not tie it up. Oh, and the team they lost Game Seven to? The Chicago Cubs. They hadn't won a World Series in 108 years.
October 19, 2024. After eight years, the renamed Guardians were playing for the pennant once again, this time against the Yankees. After dropping the first two games, the Guardians won Game Three in walk-off fashion, but lost Game Four thanks to a ninth inning rally. Game Five on that date ended up going to extra innings, and Juan Soto hit a massive three-run shot that put the Yankees ahead and ended up winning it.
Which brings us to:
October 19, 2026. Two years to the day later. The Guardians, AL Central Champions for the third straight year, and the fourth time since they became the Guardians, reverse swept the Chicago White Sox to reach the ALCS for the second time in three years. Their opponents were the Tampa Bay Rays, and Game One saw the Guardians victorious! Rays took Game Two to salvage a split, but Game Three went Cleveland's way. The Guardians were two wins away from their first pennant in a decade, but they simply ran out of gas. Games Four and Five saw the Guardians dominated and shut down, and when the series shifted back to the Trop, the Guardians just didn't have it. Granted, they did make an attempt in the eight with a pair of runs, but TB got those runs back.
Game over. Series over. Another year without a championship.

78 years. That's how long it's been for the Guardians. They have been the unfortunate owners of baseball's longest current playoff drought for 10 years now. It's the second-longest in sports by one year behind the NFL's Cardinals, who won the NFL Championship back when they were based in Chicago. And as more proof of how snake-bit the team is, look at who they lost their last three Fall Classics against. They were the Braves' one bright spot during their 14-year postseason streak. They lost to an expansion team, and they lost to a team who hadn't won in over a century. Oh, and in that 2016 Series, Cleveland was up 3-1. Just months after Cleveland's NBA team came back from 3-1 to win the Finals, Cleveland's MLB team blew a 3-1 lead in the World Series. You can't make this up.
Will the Guardians ever end their drought? Considering that the American League East can't seem to stop winning pennants, I somehow doubt it. The Guardians should run the American League Central for years, but they'll need to pick up some big pieces if they ever want a chance to party like it's 1948.
