New York's Betnijah Laney

Now for our WNBA update. It's a while and we apologize but here goes. The Connecticut Sun are the top team in the Eastern Conference with a 7-2 record. They are 4-0 at home and have the league's top defense, limiting opponents to 73.4 points per contest. Forward Jonquel Jones is having her best season ever for Connecticut. The fifth year, 6-6 veteran is averaging 20.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and hitting 54.5 percent of her shots. She's also nailing 48.8 percent of her threes.

The league is totally high on New York guard Sabrina Ionescu, which it should be as she is averaging 16.1 points, 7.1 assists and 6.6 rebounds per game. New York at 5-2 is being led in scoring by Betnijah Laney's 22.3 points per game. The 27-year-old guard has scored at least 20 points in every contest. In fact she has scored 20 points five times and had 26 and 30 points as well in the remainder of her games. Another New York star on the rise is rookie Michaela Onyenwere who is averaging 12.1 points per game. She posted 29 points on May 29 against Atlanta. She hit a six-of-14 threes in that contest.

Out of the six teams in the East, three have winning records, the one that we haven't mentioned so far is Atlanta. The Dream is 4-2 and averaging a conference best 84.7 points per game, while on a four-game win streak. Guard Courtney Williams is averaging 19.5 points per game. The 5-8 guard is also grabbing rebounds, pulling down seven boards per game. In a win at New York on May 29, she scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with seven assists.

Despite the amazing average of 26.7 points from Tina Charles, Washington is struggling at 2-4. The Mystics are shooting 38.4 percent from the field which is the worst in the Eastern Conference. Chicago is 2-5 after a 2-0 start. The much coveted free agent Candace Parker played in just the opener and has not seen action since being injured. Indiana brings up the rear in the East, shooting a league worst 26.1 percent from three during a 1-8 start. Rookie Kysre Gondrezick is the team's top three-point shooter at 42.1 percent. The problem is that she only averages 11 minutes per contest and has only attempted more than three triples in a game twice in nine games.

In the Western Conference, defending WNBA champ Seattle is on top of things with a 6-1 record. The Storm's top player Breanna Stewart is too much for the opposition. She is averaging 23.3 points and 9.7 boards per game. Stewart posted a season high 36 points against Dallas on May 22. Las Vegas is 5-3 as center Liz Cambage is leading the way her team with 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. She is also second on the team at 14.8 points per game.

Like in the East, three teams in the West are over .500. Phoenix is 4-3 and on a two-game win streak. Skylar Diggins-Smith is leading the Mercury with 18.1 points and 5.7 assists per game. As for the teams under .500, Los Angeles is 2-3. Forward Nia Coffey has been a bright spot averaging career bests 10 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.6 steals per game. Dallas is 2-4, while giving up a conference high 86.3 points per game. Minnesota is 1-4 and like LA is winless in the conference. Minnesota is led by 35-year-old Sylvia Fowles who is averaging 19.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. This is her highest scoring average since 2011 when she scored 20 points per game for Chicago.
