Players to Watch
Nia Clouden
Michigan State's go-to-woman is Nia Clouden who led the Spartans in scoring with an average of 18.7 points per contest. She had three games last year with at least 30 points. Against conference and state rival Michigan, Clouden scored 34 points on .579 shooting. She also grabbed a season best eight rebounds that game. Clouden scored 32 points against Maryland where she shot 60 percent from the field. She kicked the season off with a season high 10 assists with 15 points against Saint Francis. The high scoring guard also shined on defense with 11 games where she collected two or more steals including a season best five in a road win against Minnesota. She also scored 25 points on 62 percent shooting.
Alyza Winston
Alyza Winston was the team's second leading scorer at 11.1 points per game as she also made a team best 43 triples last season. Winston shot 6-12 from three in a home win over Iowa, where she scored a season best 25 points. During the Big Ten Tournament she made five three-pointers with 23 points to go along with another year's high, seven rebounds. Winston drained three triples or more on seven occasions and shot at least 50 percent in all of those contests.
Alisia Smith
At 6.4 boards per game, the leading rebounder for the Spartans was Alisia Smith. She had some strong performances last season including her lone double-double which was an 18-point, 10-rebound game in a home win over Purdue. Smith also matched her season high with two blocks, which she did on two other occasions. She had four games with at least 10 rebounds, her best was a 12-board outing in a 13-point home win over Wisconsin. On the road against Wisconsin she handled business by scoring a season best 19 points which included her going 11-13 from the free-throw line.
Julia Ayrault
Julia Ayrault is a big guard who at 6-2 led all Michigan State players with 24 shot rejections last season. She had nine games with at least two blocked shots, swatting three shots three times. She also showed the ability to steal the ball with a season high five takeaways in a 13-point road win over Minnesota. Her best scoring day took place in a win over Iowa where she scored 19 points, shooting a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line.
