'Zona has Grit, FGCU, 'Nati get Ws

Nov. 12

Arizona 61, Louisville 59 OT

No. 22 Arizona upset, No. 6 Louisville on a neutral court, behind 21 points from Cate Reese. The teams battled throughout the night and found themselves in overtime, where Arizona outscored Louisville 7-5.

Arizona shot an unimpressive 36 percent but were a strong 85 percent from the free-throw line, shooting 12-14. Louisville made 83 percent of its free-throws, (25-30), its problem was that it shot just 28 percent from the field. Louisville also had six assists compared to 17 turnovers. Arizona had 16 assists and 17 turnovers. It was an ugly battle but Arizona deserves credit for outlasting a team that many think is one of the best in the NCAA.

Lauren Ware led Arizona with 10 rebounds and three blocks. She also pitched-in with eight points. Ariyah Copeland gave the Wildcats a lift off of the bench with nine rebounds, eight points and two blocks.

Louisville's Hailey Van Lith got a bulk of her 19 points from the free-throw line. She shot 11-12 from the stripe in the defeat.

Cincinnati 72, Bellarmine 59

Akira Levy scored 18 points and dished out nine assists to lead Cincinnati to its second win of the season. The 5-7 junior guard gave Bellarmine fits on the defensive side as well snatching four steals and grabbing three rebounds in the contest. Arame Niang shot 6-9 to score 16 points. She also did damage on defense with eight boards and four blocks. Jillian Hayes struggled to score, shooting 1-7 and posting just five points. She also had a game high 10 turnovers but she chipped in with a game best 11 rebounds to give Cincinnati a 42-32 rebounding edge.

Transfer Tazia Jenks repeated what she did in game one, coming off of the bench to score 11 points. This time she had three assists, three steals and one blocked shot.

Bellarmine got a strong shooting performance from Claire Knies, who scored 21 points shooting 5-7 from three.

Florida Gulf Coast 70, Temple 53

After winning its first game, Temple was grounded when it travelled to Florida Gulf Coast. Kierstan Bell continues to be one of the top scorers in the NCAA, posting 26 points, shooting 10-18. She also had nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Reserve Kendall Spray pitched in 15 points for the winners, making five three-pointers on 11 attempts.

Alexa Williams had a fine game in a losing effort for Temple. She scored 23 points and pulled down 12 boards. Mia Davis scored 16 points for the Owls as well. Jasha Clinton led Temple with 10 assists. She also collected two steals and a block. Temple missed all of its 11 three-point attempts.

Nov. 11

Texas A&M 92, Southern 32

The Aggies from Texas A&M were too much for Southern as they limited the visitors to 19 percent shooting from the field. Southern had three assists and 23 turnovers while shooting 9-47 in defeat. Jordan Nixon led Texas A&M with 13 points in a very balanced scoring attack. Four other Texas A&M scorers posted at least 10 points. Reserve guard Destiny Pitts connected on four three-point shots after six attempts scoring 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. Sahara Jones, another reserve guard, also scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting from the field. Starting forward Aaliyah Patty shared the team lead with Jones snatching two steals. She also grabbed seven rebounds like Pitts, to go along with six points and one blocked shot. Kayla Wells had 11 points, three assists and three rebounds for Texas A&M.

Southern had one double-digit scorer as Aleighyah Fontenot scored 11 points, shooting 3-8 from three, while the rest of her team shot 1-10 from long distance. Forward Raven White blocked a team high two shots for the losing squad.
