Bearcats win, Briggs returns

Cincinnati 73, Alabama A&M 60

Host Cincinnati got off to a fast start outscoring Alabama A&M 20-6 in the first quarter in front of 658 fans at the Fifth Third Arena. Arame Niang led the Bearcats with 11 rebounds to go along with eight points and two blocks. Jillian Hayes was Cincinnati's leading scorer and shot blocker. She scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out five assists, blocked four shots and stole the ball twice. Hayes played a game-high 35 minutes shooting, making a game-high seven free-throws on nine attempts.

Akira Levy had a team high six assists and four steals for Cincinnati. She scored 12 points as well. Transfer Taziah Jenks came off of the bench to score 11 points and grab six rebounds. Four of her boards were on the offensive side.

Colorado 55, Oklahoma State 45

Oklahoma State struggled to score and take care of the ball as it lost its home opener to Colorado. The Cowgirls had 17 turnovers and just nine assists, while shooting 31 percent from the field, 25 percent from the three-point line and 53 percent from the free-throw line.

Colorado didn't shoot the lights out either, hitting 36 percent of its shots, including 31 percent from three. However Colorado made 16 free-throws on 66 percent shooting from the free-throw line. Colorado also had 13 assists and blocked nine shots in the win. Oklahoma State had just two rejections.

Peanut Tuitele had a game-high four blocked shots for the winners. She also pulled down eight rebounds and scored seven points. Colorado's offense was led by Jaylyn Sherrod who had six assists and just one turnover, with nine points and five boards. Mya Hollingshed scored 15 points, with five rebounds and three blocked shots.

Syracuse 87, Monmouth 46

Chrislyn Carr shot 7-10 on her way to 15 points, leading Syracuse to a season opening win over visiting Monmouth. Jayla Thornton came off of the bench to score 12 points, with four rebounds and one blocked shot. She also shot 5-8 for the victorious home team. Christianna Carr was the third Syracuse player in double-digits. She scored 11 points in 18 minutes of action. Syracuse forced 33 turnovers while collecting 17 steals. Teisha Hyman led Syracuse with four steals. She just missed a double-double as she posted nine points and nine rebounds to go along with three assists. Monmouth had one double-digit scorer as Ariana Vanderhoop had 11 points. She also had five rebounds and two steals.

Nov. 9

Mississippi State 91, Alabama State 62

Rickea Jackson racked up 26 points, five rebounds and four blocks in Mississippi State's first win of the year. Her new teammate Anastasia Hayes added 17 points, four rebounds and three assists in her first game with the Bulldogs after transferring from Middle Tennessee. Another transfer, Jerkaila Jordan, from Tulane, scored 15 with six boards and two blocks for Tulane. Farrah Pearson and Tamia Stallings posted 11 points each to lead Alabama State. Ayan Emmanuel was the third Hornet with double-digits with 10. Jada Nneji had a strong performance off of the bench with 10 rebounds, four blocks and four points.

Florida 84, Georgia State 70

Georgia State's season started off with a strong first quarter, leading host Florida 14-12 when it ended. The problem was what was next. Florida outscored Georgia State 25-13 in the second quarter and 25-20 in the third to capture a 14-point season opening win.

Kiara Smith had a team best 23 points and four assists for the Gators. Her teammate Lavender Briggs returned from a season ending injury last season, to score 16 points with seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Ashley Foster was Georgia State's top scorer with 19 points. She also led the team with six rebounds.
