DePaul 96, American 45

DePaul forward Aneesah Morrow started her much anticipated sophomore season with a near triple-double, posting 24 points, eight rebounds and six steals. After averaging 21.9 points, 13.8 rebounds and 2.7 steals last season, the Chicago native led her team to a runaway home victory.

DePaul shot 49.3 percent overall while suppressing the American offensive attack to just 32.8 percent shooting, including 3-20 from three. The winners also dominated the boards, outrebounding American 50-28.

Penn State 67, Norfolk State 61

For the second straight season Norfolk State (1-1) took on a Big Ten opponent early on and this time was much closer than last year. However, Penn State (1-0) held on for the win, edging out visiting Norfolk State by a narrow six-point victory.

Makenna Marisa led the way for Penn State with 24 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. The 5-11 guard from Mcmurray, Pennsylvania is coming off of a season where she averaged 22.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists. In the win over Norfolk State, Marisa shot 50 percent from the field including 2-4 from three. She also shot a respectable 75 percent from the free-throw line, making six of her eight free-throw attempts.

The Norfolk State defense caused problems for Penn State with guard Camille Downs leading the way. She filled the stat sheet for Norfolk State with 10 points, a game high six steals, six rebounds and four assists. Norfolk State outshot Penn State 39.7 percent to 37.7 percent. Penn State also loss the turnover battle to Norfolk State 23-22. Despite those issues Penn State was able to get to the line to shoot 29 free-throws, making 20 of those attempts. Norfolk State earned just 12 free-throw attempts making seven. Penn State also led Norfolk in rebounding, 42-36.

Belmont 56, Chattanooga 54

One of the top point guards in the NCAA, Destinee Wells scored 20 points in Belmont's season opener and boy did they need them.

Belmont (1-0) shot a miserable 28.1 percent overall but the Bruins turned it up in the fourth quarter on their homecourt outscoring Chattanooga 25-9 to rally and win the game. Wells was a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line. She also had seven rebounds, two steals and a block. Last season, she led Belmont to a 23-8 finish which ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Over her career, Wells has averaged 17.2 points, 4.5 assists and 1.6 steals in 57 career contests.

Chattanooga (1-1) was led in scoring by senior guard Yazz Wazertud-Din's 20 points.

Mississippi State 104, Mississippi Valley State 47

The Mississippi State Bulldogs beat up on in-state opponent Mississippi Valley State in both team's first game of the season.

Jerkaila Jordan paced Mississippi State in scoring, with 18 points. She also posted three steals and two blocked shots in the home win. Jordan started her career at Tulane during the 2020-21 season, where she averaged 16.7 points per game. Last season was her first at Mississippi State. She posted an averaged of 13.6 points and career high of 5.6 rebounds per contest. Against Mississippi Valley State, Jordan shot 7-11 from the field to lead her squad to the win.

Mississippi Valley State's Zaria Harleaux led the team with 12 points. The 6-1 forward made her debut for the Devilettes after two seasons at Southern.
