Bechtel wins in Raleigh, Maines has top NCAA Throw

Wilson, Davies, Sturgis are 1,2,3 in NCAA 100 meters

Tiana Wilson, Thelma Davies and Cambrea Sturgis placed first, second and third in the 100 meters at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, March 25.

Wilson, a sophomore out of Arkansas achieved a personal best with a time of 11.12. She currently sits atop of the NCAA with the fastest time in college sports. During the indoor season she competed and placed sixth at the NCAA championship meet in the 400 meters finals.

LSU freshman Thelma Davies had her first outdoor meet March 20 at the Louisiana Classic. There she placed third in the 100 with a finish of 11.57. She improved her time to 11.21 when she placed as the runner-up at the Texas Relays last weekend.

North Carolina A&T's Cambrea Sturgis is working her way back to form. Her fastest time came in 2019, when she ran 11.17 in the NCAA East Region Preliminary, where she qualified for the NCAA championships. Her 2021 outdoor debut came at the Bill Webb Multi/Bob Davidson Invite. She won with a time of 11.57. Her time of 11.23 in the final put her in the third spot at the Texas Relays but she did run a time of 11.21 in the preliminary round.

Davies and Sturgis are also in the second and third spots respectively in the NCAA.

Maines, Aquilla, Moton top three in NCAA shot put

On March 26, Tennessee's Latavia Maines recorded the top shot put throw in the NCAA so far with a mark of 17.73 at the FSU Relays. Maines has won two SEC indoor championships in the shot put, winning both this year and in 2020. This is her first NCAA outdoor season. While at Barton County Community College, she qualified for the junior college outdoor national championships in 2018 and 2019. She was the national runner-up in 2018 before placing fourth in 2019.

Adelaide Aquilla of Ohio State has the second best throw in the NCAA. She threw 17.47 at the Maryland B1G Invite, March 26. Adelaide was the leader in a field of 10 competitors, where the top three spots were taken by Ohio State throwers. Divine Oladipo was second at 16.96. Sade Olaytoye hit a mark of 16.49.

Aquilla is the back-to-back Big Ten indoor shot put champ. She also won her first national title winning at this year's NCAA indoor meet, where she threw a career best 18.12.

Also on March 26, Akealy Moton had the third best shot put throw in the NCAA at 17.47. The North Dakota State sophomore was a winner at the Wichita State Shocker Spring Invitational. Moton finished fifth at this year's NCAA indoor meet with a throw of 17.31.

Mid American Conference champ, Bechtel takes 400 in Raleigh

Miami (Ohio) senior Olivia Bechtel captured the 400 meters crown at the Raleigh Relays with a finish of 53.31. Bechtel had the top time in a field of 32 sprinters. She finished ahead of Anna Jefferson of Virginia and Duke's Iman Sule who finished second and third at 53.90 and 54.15.

Bechtel started her 2021 outdoor season at the Blizzard Buster, which was a home meet, where she won the 100 meters, 200 meters and 1,600-meter relay. Her finish at the Raleigh Relays is the 15th best time in the NCAA.

Bechtel won Mid American Conference 400 meters championships during the 2019 outdoor and 2020 indoor seasons. She ran her personal best at the 2019 outdoor Mid American Conference championship meet, when she clocked in at 52.85
