Ayesha Champagnie leads heptathlon field
The women's heptathlon at the Tennessee Relays takes place today and tomorrow. Here is a look at the 10 competitors that will go at in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA.
Kiara Rhodes
Tennessee's Kiara Rhodes is looking to get her first multi-event win since the 2019 indoor season. Her last victory came when she won the pentathlon at the Carolina Challenge with 3,762 points. She has yet to win the heptathlon on the collegiate level. She earned a team a point when she placed eight out of 16 strong competitors in this year's SEC indoor championship meet with 3,770 points.
Ayesha Champagnie
Prior to transferring to Tennessee, Ayesha Champagnie was one of the top multi-event competitors in the Big Ten when she competed for Minnesota. She was the conference runner-up in the pentathlon last year with 4,155 points. During the 2018 season she placed third in the heptathlon at the Big Ten Championships before qualifying for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships where she placed ninth.
Katie Straus
Cincinnati's Katie Straus has just missed medaling at The American Athletic Conference championships with fourth place finishes in the 2020 and 2019 pentathlon and 2019 heptathlon competitions. Over her career she has earned a win in the pentathlon at the Thundering Herd Invitational and Multi Events competition in 2019 and runner-up finishes at the same meet in 2018 and the 2020 Rod McCravey Memorial Track & Field Meet.
Sydney Spears
Sydney Spears is one of the four Cincinnati competitors in this meet. She placed ninth in this event with a career best 4,791 points at the Tennessee Relays in 2019. She earned her best finish in her first collegiate multi-event competition, when she placed third in the pentathlon at the Thundering Heard Invitational and Multi Events meet in 2019. The next season she placed fourth in the pentathlon at the 2019 Jingle Bells Open.
Juliet McGregor
Now in her first outdoor season, Cincinnati's Juliet McGregor competed in her first and only collegiate multi-event at her first meet, when she placed sixth at the 2019 Jingle Bells Open, last season. Since then she has competed for the Bearcats in the 60 meters, 60-meter hurdles, 200 meters, long jump, javelin throw and 400-meter relay over her first two seasons.
Taylor Beard
Like her teammate Juliet McGregor, Taylor Beard is in her first outdoor collegiate season but she has two multi-event competitions under her belt as a Cincinnati Bearcat. She placed sixth at the Rod McCravy Memorial Track & Field Meet and seventh at the Charlie Thomas Invitational in the pentathlon during the 2020 indoor season. This year she became an All-American as she qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the high jump.
Serena Williams
Southeast Missouri State's Serena Williams is in her first collegiate season and her first multi-event competition. In her first meet during indoor season she collected wins in the long jump, triple jump and 55 meters at the Redhawks Invite.
Briann Jenkins
Just like her teammate Serena Williams, Briann Jenkins is a freshman competitor in her first heptathlon. She earned a win during her first indoor meet in the long jump at this year's Redhawks Open.
Natosha Jordan
Auburn's Natosha Jordan is looking to capture her first SEC championship in the heptathlon in this her senior season. In 2019 she had her best SEC finish of fourth place in the heptathlon with a career best 5,389 points. She finished sixth at the 2019 Tennessee Relays with 5,111 points.
Jenna Kes
North Dakota State's Jenna Kes placed third in the pentathlon at this year's Summit League Indoor Championships for the second straight season. During the 2019 outdoor season she placed fourth at the Summit League championships in the heptathlon.
