A look at Illinois State, Va Tech & Penn

The Tennessee Relays take place April 8-11 in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA. We will take the time to let you know about some of the teams who will compete at the meet. The feature includes Illinois State, Virginia Tech and Penn.

Illinois State

Above: Seven Hicks

Freshman Seven Hicks has the team's top 100 meters time at 11.77. In her first two outdoor meets she has finished second at the Ole Miss Classic (11.95) and Illinois State Redbird Invitational (11.77). She is also one fourth of two winning 400-meter relay squads at both meets. Hicks was the runner-up finisher in the 200 meters at her first Missouri Valley Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Below: Jaclyn Greci

Jaclyn Greci is a strong relay runner and 400 meters sprinter as well. At this year's Missouri Valley Conference indoor 400-meter final she placed second before helping her team win the meet's 1,600-meter relay championship. She has helped to lead Illinois State to wins in the 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay in the Illinois State Redbird Invitational and Ole Miss Classic.

Senior Grace Beattie has been one of the top distance runners in her conference over her career. She won this year's 5,000 meters run at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships with a time of 16:50.96. She ran a career best 16:06.28 in the 5,000 at the Illinois State Redbird Invitational. That is the 24th best finish in all of the NCAA so far this season.

Below: Mya Robinson

Mya Robinson has the top 100-meter hurdles time for Illinois State at 13.92. She recorded that time in a runner-up finish at the Illinois State Redbird Invitational. It was her first 100-meter hurdles finish under 14 seconds but was wind aided 3.2, so it isn't legally represented as her best time. This year she won her first conference title in the 60-meter hurdles during indoor season.

Below: Jordyn Bruce

Senior Jordyn Bruce will lead the Redbirds in the 400-meter hurdles. She grabbed a win at the Illinois State Redbird Invitational and a second place finish at the Ole Miss Classic. She is also a talented multi-events competitor, finishing second in the pentathlon at the conference championships.

Virginia Tech

Above: Caitlan Tate

Caitlan Tate is the team's top sprinter in the 200 and 400 meters. She won the 400 meters championship at the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships. It was her second straight win in that event at the ACC championship meet. Her top 400 meters time was recorded at the 2020 ACC indoor finals race, where she ran 52.42.

Below: Essence Henderson

Shot put thrower Essence Henderson had a strong indoor season placing second at the ACC championships. She qualified for the NCAA championship meet where she placed fourth with a throw of 17.36, which is her career best. Henderson competed at the Pepsi Florida Relays and placed 10th in the shot put and fourth in the discus throw. Her throw of 54.98 was also a personal best and is the 15th best throw in the NCAA.

Below: Sara Killinenn

Freshman Sara Killinen is Virginia Tech's top competitor in the hammer throw. She threw a personal best 63.89 at the Raleigh Relays where she placed third. That throw ranks 22nd in the NCAA. At the Pepsi Florida Relays she finished fourth with a throw of 59.19.


Isabella Whitaker is Penn's top performer in the 200 and 400 meters so far this season. The freshman won both events at her first meet, the Penn Challenge on March 27. She won the 200 at 23.76 and the 400 at 53.54.

Below: Mayyi Mahama

Mayyi Mahama is thrower that is among the best in the nation. Her winning hammer throw of 64.79 at the Penn Challenge is the 16th best mark in the NCAA. She won the weight throw at the Ivy League Indoor Championship in 2020. During the 2019 season she qualified for the NCAA Championships during outdoor season in the hammer throw. Mahama was the national champ at the USATF Under-20 Championships in the hammer throw with a mark of 65.66.
