The 2022 Red Sox Team has no Identity

What are Your Thoughts on This Year's Boston Red Sox?

The 2022 Red Sox Team has no identity. Because I have been following the team since I was 6 years old; I’m not a fan of this year’s team.

The 2022 Red Sox Team

When the season started; I wrote that I had concerns about the team’s starting pitching and bullpen. Check out my Red Sox Open Their 2022 Season Today post to read more about this year’s team.

Now that a month has gone by; I can honestly say I don’t like this year’s team. In the first place, this team is lacking an identity.

What is Wrong with the 2022 Red Sox Team

So, let’s start with what is lacking from this year’s team.

If you are involved in any type of sports; the key ingredient is being a good teammate. With this in mind, many of the team players refuse to be vaccinated. For instance, Tanner Houck missed his start with the Toronto Blue Jays due to Canada’s policy toward any visitors not being vaccinated.

Secondly, their pitching is a major issue. In fact, their bullpen cannot hold a lead.

In the last 10 years; they are the first team to lose to all 4 divisional opponents within a month.

Moreover, their offense has been dismal.

In fact, many Analysts predicted they would have one of the strongest offenses in the infield in baseball this year. But, that hasn’t been the case. In their last 10 games; they only scored 31 runs.

Why did Chaim Bloom sign Trevor Story for 6 years for $140 million?

What Needs to Change

Although Alex Cora said in his interview after another loss to Baltimore; there are no rah-rah speeches here.

However, even when this team wins; it is lacking the excitement of prior teams.

When Story entered free agency; he was coming off a bad year. In my opinion, I haven’t seen anything positive coming from this player, With his declining numbers from last year; I am confused on why the team went after Story.

For instance after the Sox came back from a no-hitter against the Rays; Story had a throwing error which caused the Rays player to reach base. Because of his error; the team lost the game. And, that isn’t the first poor throw he has made in the early season.

Moreover, one of my biggest issues is why Bloom signed Story before agreeing to an extension with Xander Bogarts. Not only has Bogarts been a stellar player for the team since his inception; but he has one of the best batting averages in the MLB.

Comparing Last Season to 2018’s Team

After the Red Sox team surprised many people by beating both the Yankees and the Rays in the 2021 playoffs; many had hopes that this team would want to finish what they started last years. However, this year’s team is reminding me of the 2018 team that won the World Series. To learn more about their 2018 World Series run; check out my Boston Red Sox Win World Series post.

When the season started in 2019; I took my Nephew to the opening day game to see the banner raised and the team get their rings. But what happened early in the season; is this team didn’t resemble the team that won the World Series. To read more about how 2019 started; visit my Red Sox World Series Hangover 2019 post.

Though the 2018 team had hopes of repeating in 2019; they had a really bad year.

Reminiscent to 2019; this year has a lot of similarities. For example, both teams had players who were on the last year of their contract. Another similarity is both teams had pitching woes. In 2019, it was the teams starters and this year’s bullpen is terrible.

Where will the 2022 Red Sox Team be at end of the Regular Season

In essence, the 2022 Red Sox are going to have their hands full in the American League East. Since four teams won 91+ games last year; these teams look really good early on.

Though the team had a good home record last year; will this year’s team be able to turn things around? Sadly, this team has already dug themselves into a big hole.

After their loss to the Orioles this past weekend; Bogarts said, “They are the team they have shown everyone so far”.

So, the question is will the offense show up? And, will their starting pitching continue to be decent? And, will the bullpen get fixed? Of course, there are a lot o questions remaining on this year’s team. Hopefully, Chaim Bloom is at work trying to fix this year’s team.

As always, I welcome your comments on the 2022 Red Sox.
