Recap of Track & Field in 2022

As the college track and field season has come to a close, we will take time to take a look at women in the sport who competed and made things happen in 2022.

Tionna Brown - LSU

After a successful start of her collegiate career at Alabama State, Tionna Brown has become an All-American sprinter at LSU. Brown, a 5-5 sprinter from Kokomo, Indiana, became an SEC champion this year at the conference outdoor meet as a member of the 400-meter relay. She qualified and competed at the NCAA championships during outdoor season where she was on the fourth-place team of the 400-meter relay. She also competed in the 100 meters at the NCAA championships. During her first collegiate season at Alabama State, Brown was the SWAC champion in the 100 meters and 200 meters during outdoor season and the 60 meters and 200 meters during indoor season.

Aasia Laurencin - Michigan

After transferring from Texas Aasia Laurencin came to Michigan and returned the NCAA Championships for the second straight season. The native of Southfield, Michigan concluded her indoor season with a second place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the Big Ten championship meet with a time of 8.27 seconds. During the outdoor season she placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Laurencin followed that by running a career best time of 13.06 at the NCAA East Preliminary.

Makayla Sumrall - Wayne State

Roseville, Michigan native Makayla Sumrall had a dominant season for Wayne State. She won the gold in both the 100 meters and 200 meters at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She was also a member of the third-place 400-meter relay squad. She ran her best time in the 100 meters during the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships when she ran 11.61 seconds in the preliminary round. Sumrall qualified for the NCAA championships during indoor season as well. She won the conference championship in the 60-meters at 7.57. Her best 60-meters time was 7.48, which was a winning time at the Saginaw Valley State University Tune-Up.

Kayla Jones -Ball State

Kayla Jones started her career at Ball State during the 2021 indoor season. She closed it by earning her first collegiate medal as a bronze medal member of the third place 1,600-meter relay team at the Mid-American Indoor Track & Field Championships. Her second medal came this year when she took centerstage during the finals of the 800 meters at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. After placing third during the preliminary round with a finish of 2:09.82, she came back the next day and finished first in the final at 2:07.61. Jones, from Westerville, Ohio, closed her season as a qualifier and competitor in the 800 meters at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.

Yasmeen Tinsley - Monmouth

Arlington, Virginia native Yasmeen Tinsley proved to be a valuable investment for the Monmouth track and field program. At the Metro Atlantic Indoor Track & Field Championships she lifted Monmouth to a team championship, behind a stellar performance. Tinsley scored three silver medals in the 200 meters, 60-meter hurdles and as a member of the 1,600-meter relay. Tinsley helped her team win an outdoor title winning the silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles and the 1,600-meter relay. She was the Rookie of the Meet at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships.
