Stan Kroenke Agrees to Buy Los Angeles Angels, Ending Arte Moreno’s 23-Year Ownership Era

The Los Angeles Rams and Arsenal owner is set to take control of the Angels in a blockbuster MLB deal that could mark a dramatic new beginning for the struggling franchise.

The Los Angeles Angels are preparing to enter a new era after billionaire sports owner Stan Kroenke reached an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Major League Baseball franchise from longtime owner Arte Moreno.

The stunning ownership change immediately became one of the biggest stories in American sports, particularly because Kroenke already controls an extraordinary collection of successful professional teams.

For Angels fans who have watched their team struggle through years of losing seasons and missed playoff opportunities, the deal offers something that has been increasingly difficult to find in Anaheim: hope.

Stan Kroenke Is Bringing His Sports Empire to MLB

Stan Kroenke is already one of the most powerful owners in professional sports.

Through Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, his portfolio includes the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL, the Denver Nuggets of the NBA, the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL, the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer and Premier League giant Arsenal.

Now, the Los Angeles Angels are set to become the latest major franchise under the Kroenke umbrella.

What makes the move particularly interesting is that Major League Baseball represents relatively new territory for Kroenke. However, his experience running championship-caliber organizations across several different sports could be exactly what the Angels need.

The Rams have won a Super Bowl under Kroenke's ownership, the Nuggets captured an NBA championship, the Avalanche have enjoyed Stanley Cup success, and Arsenal have remained one of world football's most valuable and ambitious clubs.

That record naturally creates enormous expectations in Anaheim.

A Potential Record-Breaking Angels Sale

The exact financial terms were not disclosed in the official announcement, but reports surrounding the transaction have placed its value above the recent $3.9 billion benchmark set by the San Diego Padres sale.

The Wall Street Journal has reported the Angels transaction at approximately $4 billion, which would make it a record-setting MLB deal.

Regardless of the final publicly confirmed figure, there is little doubt that Kroenke is making an enormous investment in the Angels.

And that investment is about much more than purchasing a baseball team.

The Angels operate in Southern California, one of the largest and most commercially valuable sports markets in the United States. Kroenke already has a huge presence in the region through the Rams, SoFi Stadium and the surrounding Hollywood Park development.

Adding the Angels extends that sports and entertainment footprint into Orange County.

Why Angels Fans Have Been Waiting for Change

The ownership transition comes after years of frustration for Angels supporters.

Arte Moreno purchased the franchise in 2003, shortly after the Angels captured their only World Series championship in 2002.

The beginning of Moreno's ownership was actually highly successful.

The Angels won multiple American League West division titles and regularly competed for postseason opportunities during the 2000s.

Over time, however, the franchise's fortunes changed dramatically.

The Angels have not reached the postseason since 2014, despite having some of baseball's greatest individual talents on their roster during that period.

Perhaps nothing represents the team's struggles better than the fact that Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani spent years together in Anaheim without producing a postseason appearance.

Having two generational superstars should have created a championship window.

Instead, the Angels became associated with expensive contracts, disappointing roster construction and repeated losing seasons.

What Happens to Mike Trout?

One of the biggest questions surrounding the ownership change involves Mike Trout.

Trout has been the face of the Angels for more than a decade and remains one of the most important players in franchise history.

An ownership change can often lead to major changes throughout an organization. New owners can hire new executives, change the baseball operations department and completely rethink how a roster should be constructed.

That means Trout's future will inevitably become a major talking point.

For now, there is no indication that the Angels must move on from him simply because Kroenke is taking control.

Trout has repeatedly shown his attachment to the organization and Southern California.

The more important question may be what sort of team the new ownership group intends to build around him.

The Angels Need More Than Big-Name Players

One of the most important challenges facing Kroenke will be rebuilding the organization beyond the major league roster.

The Angels' problems cannot be solved simply by signing another expensive superstar.

The franchise needs stronger player development, smarter roster construction, organizational stability and a long-term strategy capable of competing with baseball's strongest organizations.

That comparison becomes even harder to ignore because the Los Angeles Dodgers operate only a short distance away.

The Dodgers have established themselves as one of MLB's most powerful organizations through elite talent, aggressive spending, strong scouting and consistent player development.

For years, Angels fans have watched their Southern California rivals compete for championships while their own club remained outside the postseason.

Kroenke will now be expected to narrow that enormous competitive gap.

Arte Moreno Leaves Behind a Complicated Legacy

Arte Moreno's 23-year tenure will likely be remembered very differently depending on which period Angels fans focus on.

The early years included division championships, competitive teams and considerable success.

The later years were far more difficult.

The Angels went from being one of the American League's most consistent contenders to a franchise struggling to escape the bottom of its division.

Moreno previously explored selling the Angels in 2022 before ultimately deciding to retain ownership.

This time, however, the transition appears real.

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire controlling ownership, with the transaction expected to close in early 2027 after customary conditions and Major League Baseball approval are completed.

A New Era Could Be Beginning in Anaheim

There are no guarantees that changing ownership automatically produces a winning baseball team.

Kroenke will still need the right executives, scouts, coaches and players.

But his arrival immediately changes the perception surrounding the Angels.

Instead of wondering whether the franchise is willing to make major organizational changes, fans can now look toward an ownership group with enormous financial resources and a history of pursuing championships across multiple sports.

That does not mean the Angels will suddenly become World Series contenders.

Rebuilding a struggling MLB organization can take years.

But after more than a decade without postseason baseball, even the possibility of a new direction feels significant.

For Angels fans, the Stan Kroenke era represents something they have been waiting a long time to experience: a genuine opportunity for a fresh start.
