Located in East Cleveland, Ohio, Shaw High School has one of the most long lasting but underappreciated sports histories in all of the United States.

From being the only school in the state of Ohio to have a stadium that hosted actual NFL games to all of the athletes from the 1800's to the present that have gone on to lead productive lives and make history along the way, Shaw sports has a decorated past that most schools could only wish to own.

Enjoy this continuing series that will introduce you to some of the greatest athletes to ever call themselves Shaw Cardinals. Feel free to join the Shaw Cardinals Sports Group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/810810319312653/

GREG BELL - The Horace Grant Slayer

Greg Bell (right) battles Horace Grant in NCAA Tournament.

Shaw 1983 graduate, Greg Bell was the leader of the school’s best team of the decade. His 24-1 team was undefeated all the way to the regional semifinal when it lost by a narrow two-point margin. Bell was selected as the Associated Press Northeast Ohio Lakes District Co-Player of the Year. Bell averaged 18.6 points per game his final season at Shaw and was selected first team All-Ohio. After Shaw Bell made national news as a forward at Southwest Missouri. In 1987, Bell helped his team get to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as they defeated Clemson led by future Chicago Bull, NBA champion and All-Star Horace Grant, who Bell played a key role in defending. Southwest Missouri won 15 straight games that season with a record of 28-5.

In the second round they lost a tight game to future NBA number one pick Danny Manning and Kansas. Bell received lots of praise for his toughness and ability to play on the level of the best forwards in the country.

STEVE SANDERS - From Shaw to Cincinnati

Steve Sanders at Cincinnati

1985 Shaw grad, Steve Sanders was the leading man on the football field as a star wide receiver but he won more in high school and college as a basketball player. During his senior season he helped Shaw collect its fourth Lake Erie League title in five years. Sanders was an All-Lake Erie League performer in hoops and football, but went on to college to compete as a football player. After playing wide receiver for three seasons at Cincinnati, Sanders gave college basketball a try during the 1989- 90 season. As a walk-on he competed under legendary coach Bob Huggins, as his 43 percent three-point shooting helped to lead Cincinnati to its first 20-win season since 1977. His biggest highlight was scoring the game winning three-pointer in Huggins' first win at UC in a 66-64 upset over 20th ranked Minnesota.

REGGIE KEMP - YSU Hall of Famer

Class of 1988 graduate, Reggie Kemp was one of Shaw’s most electric scorers. During his senior season he averaged 21 points including a 33-point 21-rebound effort to defeat Lake Erie League foe Shaker Heights. He continued his high scoring ways in college where he wowed audiences at Youngstown State. Inducted into the YSU Hall of Fame in 2004, he had two games where he scored at over 40 points.

In 1990 he posted 42 against St. Francis which was led by future NBA guard Mike Iuzzolino (featured on the first arcade version of NBA Jam). Kemp topped that performance with a 46-point performance against Wright State, which is currently tied for the fifth highest total in school history. In fact nobody has scored as many points in a game at the school since.
