Winning Moments at The Lords

The fact that it’s a test match, and an away test series from home, is always exciting. Adding to that are the tailenders and fast bowlers finishing! Yes, it felt nothing short of a total dream.

After the bizarre test at Gabba this January, everything became a sense of doability. But, there’s uniqueness at LORDS, the inherent pressure, and the racing heart to give it all for your team because anything less at Cricket’s Mecca is unimaginable!!

It’s a crime to compare one match with another, anytime and never in Test Cricket. So, what standards? None. We just watch with a naive heart.

The stylish opening from India in the first innings on day one with the memorable knock from KL gave the spice necessary to hold onto the dessert until the end. But once the English seamers rattled the Indian middle-order, we could only fare to a decent total instead of a big score.

Guess what? England went to a grandeur then. Root brought out the immense class hidden with the help of middle-order and stood tall with 180 runs until the very end, taking England to a narrow lead.

It went on being a match of a lifetime with the patience the players displayed at every instance they caught of it, playing nearly 250 overs.

If it was one scary thing hovering, it’s the sudden appearance of rain and clouds in England. We know how messy the World Test Championship went. Thanks to LORDS, nothing of that sort popped up. Yet, a heartwarming moment was when this fan, Jarvo, walked into the field, convincing the security about being an Indian player. This incident left the internet continent in splits demanding to retire jersey number 69 in memory of the fan wearing it. Comical!

Until this moment, a lead of 27 runs was pretty average, and all the thoughts for day 4 were to withstand and give a fight to English bowlers who mentioned it “as their backyard,” especially of the veteran!

The openers didn’t withstand much, but Pujara and Rahane held their nerves, presented their intent to bat on, and gave just what was necessary. But their batting was just the cherry on the cake. What Shami and Bumrah did for the 9th wicket was truly indescribable. The highest-standing partnership at 9th wicket for India against England. This duo, with a collection of 89 runs, leaving Anderson wicketless at his place. A feat!

I don’t know what happened to 4 overs, but the tally changed to 60 overs remaining from 64, and all we had we needed were ten wickets of the opposition to pull off those stumps—a mammoth of a line up ahead.

At this, the heroic duo starts with wickets (feigning ignorance to the extras), sending the openers of England for a duck. Just what we wanted. Nothing more. Nothing less.

A couple of catches dropping aside, we held our line onto the wickets and six wickets required at tea break.

I’ve been searching for the refreshments they had, seeing how Root got tricked right after tea. It didn’t take long then, except for Butler to scare for a while.

The quick four wickets from Siraj, 2 in each of his overs, were simply marvelous and not to forget from especially calling out the winning ball, taking the bails off from Anderson’s wickets!

Among everything that has happened, although not the exact series we wish to see from Kohli through the bat, his captaincy, standing up for his mates, and the energy calls for applause.

When Lords comes to ears, one among many things to recall immediately is the match from the series of Natwest in 2002 and Ganguly’s stunt from the balcony, but now, I’m in splits with which will strike as the first image.

But there’s one definite thing, our pacers, doing the impossible overseas, making a home away from home and precisely the Home of Cricket, our Backyard - Siraj, Shami, Ishant, Bumrah. Floored for em’!

This Victory, etched for decades to come!!
