Hogg’s last appearance for his nation came in this year’s Six Nations, winning his 100th cap in the game against Ireland before being forced off with ankle damage. His final game as an expert player came for Exeter Chiefs in the Champions Cup semi-final downfall to La Rochelle. In an ornate career, Hogg won the Gallagher Premiership and Champions Cup with Exeter and the Pro12 with Glasgow.

He was also part of Scotland’s recent Calcutta Cup wins and toured three times with the British and Irish Lions. In a report, he said it is hard where to start but with great sadness and a huge amount of pride, I am declaring my immediate departure from playing rugby. I fought with everything I had to make the Rugby World Cup but this time my body has not been able to do the things I wanted and wanted it to do.

France Rugby World Cup 2023: We knew this day would come finally

I just never thought it would be this soon. It’s hard to put into words just how much of an effect the game has had on my life. I will be retiring knowing that I have given my body and heart to rugby. I will be forever grateful to this amazing public and cannot wait to begin my trip as a proud fan of the Scotland Rugby World Cup team. Gregor Townsend said following Stuart’s news we would like to wish him all the best in his departure.

He has been an outstanding player for Scotland and has had a profession lit up with so many accomplishments, highlights and special memories. We respect his choice to step away now and understand the pressures and challenges his body has gone through in recent seasons. He has been an essential part of our RWC team for many years, as well as leading the side to famous victories over England and France in 2021.

Other RWC star players wish him luck

Rugby World Cup 2023: CEO of Scottish Rugby said

Mark Dodson, CEO of Scottish Rugby said, I’d like to thank Stuart for his huge contribution to rugby in Scotland so far. He has truly been a superstar for our game and along the way set histories and reached milestones which his talent and application richly earned. There have been many highlights during his club and RWC career and few players had the skill to ignite a crowd like Hoggy.

Naturally, we have all seen him develop as a player and a person throughout his occupation and I know how proud Hoggy has been to represent the Scotland rugby team throughout his 100 caps and when captain of his country. Like all Rugby World Cup fans, we will miss him as a player and wish him all the very finest with the next chapter of his life.
