Shaw wins home opener 95-82 over Admiral King

Senior forwards Basra Fakhir and Calvin Brown combined for 45 points as Shaw outscored Admiral King by 13 in the fourth quarter to capture a win in its first home game of the season.

While the front court got busy in the paint, Shaw also got five three-point buckets from guard Dontay Hardnett.

"This was a great home opener," coach Leon Hines said to the media after the game. "We went with our power, our kids underneath, Basra and Brown. And we got a great game from Dontay."

Nakia Bullard's has her moment in the sun

During her time at Shaw, Christina Aden, Asia Polk, Lauren Billingsley, Tierra Reed were among the top players that Nakia Bullard was able to play with on the court.

Bullard was a post player who wasn't a top option on offense. She didn't make the newspapers on a regular basis and wasn't the biggest concern in opposing coaches scouting reports. Despite all this, Bullard had one of the most heart warming performances when she posted 21 points and 21 rebounds in a win over defending Lake Erie League champ Warrensville Heights.

"I don't even remember Nakia from last year," said Warrensville Heights head coach Larry Ellis. I don't know where she came from. How do I stop it? I don't know. You tell me how to stop her. She's hard, man. She's a big girl and she's tough to stop down low."

Bullard's performance put Shaw in first place during a game that some thought the Lady Cardinals would lose. Aden, who was averaging 22 points per game was out with an injury, so Warrensville Heights thought it didn't have much to worry about on the offensive side. Bullard had a stretch in the fourth quarter where she scored four straight baskets, which helped Shaw pull away with the 70-55 win.

"They thought they were gonna come in here and get us, but they didn't" Bullard said after the game. "They were little people down there tonight against me. They just couldn't stop me."

Polk also scored 27 points during that contest. As good as her performance was, Bullard's night was the talk of Shaw High because nobody saw it coming.

Chandler and Anderson lead Shaw runners

Marques Anderson was a part of the 400-meter relay squad that won the Lake Erie League championship. He also won the league title in the 100-meter dash. Antonio Chandler won the Lake Erie League's 800-meter run title and was second in the 1,600 meter run. He was also on the LEL winning 1,600-meter relay squad.

Located in East Cleveland, Ohio, Shaw High School has one of the most long lasting but underappreciated sports histories in all of the United States.

From being the only school in the state of Ohio to have a stadium that hosted actual NFL games to all of the athletes from the 1800's to the present that have gone on to lead productive lives and make history along the way, Shaw sports has a decorated past that most schools could only wish to own.

We invite you to enjoy this continuing series that will introduce you to some of the greatest athletes to ever call themselves Shaw Cardinals. Feel free to join the Shaw Cardinals Sports Group on Facebook:
