Cardinals capture first 10-win season in school history
Shaw had unbeaten seasons in the past. The Cardinals went unbeaten in 1915, going 7-0 and accomplished the feat again in 1966 finishing at 9-0-1. The 1990 Shaw football squad was the first to finish 10-0. It did so with a 23-8 win over Lakewood.
Due to a computer system, Shaw didn't make the state playoffs, which it did the year before at 9-1. Nonetheless the 1990 squad can say that it completed its season without a blemish which only two other teams before it could claim.
Senior Dale Jackson opened things up with a second quarter touchdown run of 40 yards. A Richard Fells extra point made the score 7-0. The thrilling DeAndre Houston scored on an 11-yard touchdown run in the same quarter, making the score 13-0. Both Jackson and Houston also got interceptions in the second quarter as well.
Shaw went into the half with a 16-0 lead after Fells nailed a 20-yard field goal late in the second quarter.
Lakewood made it a close contest when it scored in the third quarter making it 16-8, but Shaw closed the quarter out with an 83-yard touchdown pass play as Jackson caught a pass from quarterback Leonard Sharp for the final score of the contest.
The victorious Cardinals got big defensive contributions with fourth quarter interceptions by William Tripplett and Darelle Joiner.
Located in East Cleveland, Ohio, Shaw High School has one of the most long lasting but underappreciated sports histories in all of the United States.
From being the only school in the state of Ohio to have a stadium that hosted actual NFL games to all of the athletes from the 1800's to the present that have gone on to lead productive lives and make history along the way, Shaw sports has a decorated past that most schools could only wish to own.
We invite you to enjoy this continuing series that will introduce you to some of the greatest athletes to ever call themselves Shaw Cardinals. Feel free to join the Shaw Cardinals Sports Group on Facebook:
