Our fifth blast from the past goes all the way back to 1950 and comes up to 2004. As we showcase some big time performances in Shaw sports history. Check out these historic performances as we continue to explore the rich tradition of boys and girls athletics from East Cleveland, Ohio's only high school.

May 4, 1950

District championship captured after comeback over Shaker

Seventy years ago Shaw won the district championship over Shaker Heights in a 6-5 win. The Cardinals were down 5-2 in the seventh inning before charging back into the game with three runs scored. Shaw scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eight to advance in the tournament.

May 7, 1981

Ladybirds stop area rival Glenville for district title

Shaw played Glenville for the third time during that season. The first two times were routes as Shaw won 53-29 and 56-38 respectively. This time Glenville was more competitive but it still didn't have enough as the Ladybirds held off the Tarblooders 47-41.

Shaw had a narrow lead of 16-15 after the first quarter before extending that lead to 27-23 at the half. Glenville fought hard behind Sabrina Whitley's 16 points to tie things up 33-33 at the end of the third quarter. Shaw took over in the fourth and outscored its opponent by six points.

Star guard Thea Wellons led everyone with 18 points and had help from other talented scorers including Oretha Lilly's 15 and Pamela Williams 12-point performance.

February 12, 2004

Shaw tops Eastlake North 47-38 for respect

Tierra Reed scored 15 points with five assists in Shaw's victory against Eastlake North. Head coach Edith Spivey said, "We get no respect. Nobody respects us and we're a quality team."

Shooting guard Kourtney Harrell pitched in on the win as well with 12 points and three rebounds.

November 16, 1916

Shaw blows out local business college 32-6

The Cardinals took on the Spencerian Business College (later known as Chancellor University) and pounded it by 26 points. The team captain Eddie Hale scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Sept. 8, 1984

Chris Irons' 56-yard pass wins game over Tarblooders

Shaw struggled in a tight grinding contest against Glenville, but pulled out a win in the fourth quarter.

Glenville's Dwayne Shields scored the game's first touchdown with a one yard run. The Tarblooders added a saftey to the scoreboard when Greg Dykes blocked a Shaw punt in the second quarter.

After being down 8-0 Shaw came alive when Lamont Field got in the endzone on a run by Lamont Fields. Shaw finally got the lead and win when Chris Irons threw a 56-yard touchdown to the team's top receiver Steven Sanders.

October 9, 1993

Big Red throttles Lakewood 41-8

Shaw scored over 40 points three times in 1993. On this occasion it was over Lake Erie League foe Lakewood.

"I've never seen anybody run over us the way these guys did," said Lakewood coach Kevin Fell. "We couldn't stop them, and we couldn't do anything to help ourselves defensively."

Shaw head coach Tom Mental said, "This was the best I've seen Shaw play in the 10 years I've been here." Running back Omari Parks scored two touchdowns. His first was a first quarter run of 21 yards and the second came in the fourth when he scored on a 28-yard carry.

Demetrius Kettles scored on a nine yard rush in the second quarter. He also converted a the two-point conversion with a run. Don Patterson connected with tight end Calvin Brown for an eight yard touchdown pass. The two also scored an extra two-point conversion pass play as well before the half.

In the third quarter Kevin Shareef ripped off a 64-yard run to put Shaw up 30-0, before Lakewood got on the scoreboard before the end of the quarter. The final score of the game came when backup back Elton Cooper scored on a two yard run.

Located in East Cleveland, Ohio, Shaw High School has one of the most long lasting but underappreciated sports histories in all of the United States.

From being the only school in the state of Ohio to have a stadium that hosted actual NFL games to all of the athletes from the 1800's to the present that have gone on to lead productive lives and make history along the way, Shaw sports has a decorated past that most schools could only wish to own.
