My Thoughts About the NFL Ending the Pro Bowl

The 70-plus year-old tradition is no more

The National Football League (NFL) recently announced that they've eliminated the Pro Bowl, which had been an annual tradition since 1951. Reasons behind this move was due to low fan interest and players expressing their disdain of it. Instead, it'll be an honor-only designation. In other words, 88 players would be selected and honored as part of a celebration weekend in Los Angeles instead of playing a game. The Pro Bowl as a game is gone forever, but the title will still be present. I've always seen All-Star games as meaningless, and the Pro Bowl is in this category. Honestly, I approve of this move, because I never had an interest in watching the Pro Bowl. The league should've gotten rid of this game to begin with and allowed players and teams who were taking part in the Super Bowl to rest. In my opinion, the NFL's move to end the Pro Bowl is a win for players and fans. Also, it's a way for the league to save money. I'm not sad that the Pro Bowl is no longer a thing. I wish Major League Baseball would get rid of the All-Star Game, which I know it will never happen anytime soon.

Speaking of the MLB All-Star Game, I've spoken about my criticisms of the century-plus year-old annual event in previous stories, but in case you've missed them, I'll share my opinions about it. The one thing that fans have complained about is the fan voting and how players are selected to participate in the midsummer classic. They've described the selection process as a popularity contest and a joke. To me, it's completely biased and players are only selected based on their popularity as opposed to their individual stats. There have been players over the years who have been selected but didn't deserve to be in the All-Star Game in the first place, which always leads to players who should've been chosen to be unfairly snubbed. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler declined to take part in the All-Star Game last month and he also took issue with the selection process. MLB offered him a spot on the roster after being snubbed, but he refused to be the fifth fiddle in the rotation and felt disrespected. He sat out of the midsummer classic in solidarity of other pitchers in the league who weren't selected. I featured the three-time All-Star in my Token of Appreciation series story back in June. I'll have a link to that story down below. The Field of Dreams Game returned and was played for the first time since 2021. I rather watch that as opposed to watching a yearly meaningless game, which it is. I would like the league to eliminate the All-Star Game and replace it with the Field of Dreams Game or have all Baseball Hall of Famers take part in a game. However, that would be easier said than done, since these brands are always money hungry. The last All-Star Game I watched on TV was back in 2024, because my beloved Rangers were hosting the event.

Regardless of the sport, I believe that All-Star Games should be eliminated and done away with. They're boring, a snooze fest, and uninteresting. Plus, they're a waste of money. The greed from these companies and sponsors benefiting from these events are one of the reasons why I no longer view them. To them, they're nothing but a cash grab. Going back to the MLB All-Star Game, until the fan voting process goes through major changes to make it fair and fans stop being biased towards certain players, I'll continue to opt out of watching the midsummer classic.
