MLB Pennant Race 2026: Oh, Ho, Ho, It's Magic Numbers!

While the NFL celebrated the very first Sunday of the season, MLB's action brought the season down to the final two weeks. Now, it gets serious. Time starts to really run out for teams. For some, it's already over. For others, it's close to being over. On the positive side, teams are closing in on officially becoming October bound, whether it's as a Wild Card or as Division Champions.

Some teams have already made it:

September 11 saw the Tampa Bay Rays as the first team to qualify for the 2026 Postseason. The Rays' 3-1 win over the Astros (capped off by Junior Caminero's walk-off two-run homer) put them in the dance for the first time since 2023, and they are looking to win a postseason series for the first time since winning the pennant in 2020. The Rays currently lead the American League East by four games over the New York Yankees, and the two teams face each other one more time during the final week.

That same day saw the Milwaukee Brewers punch their ticket in massive fashion: a 20-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. For Milwaukee, this is their eighth postseason appearance in nine years, but they are still looking to get over the hump. The Brewers are coming off a disastrous end in the NLCS, being swept by the Dodgers, including losing Game Four to Shohei Ohtani. The Brewers are looking for their first pennant since 1982, and they're looking to finally win the big one in their 57th season of play.

So the Rays and Brewers are in, and the next step is winning their divisions. That's where the magic numbers come in. A magic number is the combined number of wins by Team A and losses by Team B needed for the latter to clinch, well, something. In the case of the Rays, their magic number to win the AL East is 10, mainly because the season series against the Yankees isn't finished yet. The Brewers' magic number to clinch the NL Central? Two. Milwaukee leads the Cubs by 10 games with 11 to play, and they clinched the season series. The Brewers can clinch the Central as early as Tuesday.

As for other magic numbers:

In regards to the rest of the American League races, both the Central and West are very close. The Chicago White Sox are only a half game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central, and they face each other one last time starting Monday. Chicago's magic number to win the Central is 13, but if they win just one of their remaining games against Cleveland, they clinch the season series, and that number shrinks to 10. The West has no teams with winning records, but it's the Astros leading at 75-75. It's a one game lead over the Rangers, and because Houston clinched the season series, their magic number is 11 to win the West.

The Wild Card standings are interesting, especially the race for WC3, which the Guardians currently hold by a single game. Cleveland's magic number is 12 to get in. As for the Red Sox, their magic number is six, meaning that they could get in to the postseason before the week is out. And then there's the Yankees. With our 2-0 win over the Mets, our magic number to get into the postseason is one. A win or a Jays loss on Monday gets us in, and the Yankees are in Minnesota.

A majority of the remaining National League races are pretty much kaput. The Braves have the largest divisional magic number: seven (to clinch the National League East). The Dodgers are very close to getting into the postseason; their magic number is two, and they can get in as early as Monday--a win and a Diamondbacks loss will get it done. When it comes to the NL West, the Dodgers' magic number for that is four. The Wild Card race isn't that exciting, either. The Cubs, Phillies, and Padres currently hold the spots, but only the Diamondbacks have an outside shot. Regarding respective magic numbers, Cubs' number eight, Philly's is nine, and San Diego's is 10.

September 29 kicks off the Postseason with the best-of-three Wild Card Series. When the Wild Card round started in 2012, ESPN and TBS aired the single game round, swapping leagues every year. When the round extended in 2022, ESPN aired all four Wild Card Series in their entirety until last season. This year, the 15th overall year of the Wild Card round (fifth under the best-of-three format), NBC will have the entire Wild Card Series, inheriting ESPN's role. Regarding the LDS and LCS, this year, TBS airs the American League, while Fox and FS1 has the National League. As for the World Series, Fox has the Fall Classic for the 27th straight season.

Two weeks remain, and I have a feeling that these last 14 days will be quite fruitful. This will be a truly fantastic two-week finish!
