MLB Pennant Race 2026: 168 Hours

A lot can happen in one week, and regarding the 2026 Major League Baseball season, that's all that's left. The final week of any season always brings the thrills, and baseball is no different. For a team, a week is the last two series of the season, and that week is always mega-important for any teams looking to get in. And since I've been giving little tidbits in each of these, here's one last one: this is the fifth year without tiebreaker games.

Remember the tiebreakers? That extra game needed in case of a tie for either the division lead or a vital spot after 162 games? They took that out after 2021 was completed; the last season with a tiebreaker was 2018, which was the only season to have two such games. Now, in the event that (at least) two teams are tied for an important spot, internal tiebreakers are involved, with head-to-head being the first one. Also, the final day (Game 162) will see all 15 games start at the same time (3PM Eastern/Noon Pacific). That way, they avoid unimportant games starting after important ones end. It reminds me, in a way, of how Week 18 of the NFL season not only has all division games, but the start times aren't announced until after Week 17's SNF game ends.

So with that, let's take a look at what's left to solve in the final week of the season.

I want to start with the National League first, because it has the least to solve. How little is left? With one week left, all three division races are over. The Milwaukee Brewers won the NL Central on September 15. Two days later, the Los Angeles Dodgers won the NL West, and on September 20, the Atlanta Braves won the NL East. The only thing left is positioning, and when it comes to division champions, the top two get byes straight to the Division Series, while the lowest seeded division champion hosts a Wild Card Series. The Brewers are one win or a Braves loss away from getting a bye, while their magic number to get the #1 seed is now at four. As for the Dodgers, their magic number to get a bye is currently at three.

As for what's left, well, it's not much:

The numbers got immensely thinned out in the National League, as we are now down to four teams battling for the three Wild Card spots. The Cubs, Padres, and Phillies are all currently holding those three spots, with the Cubs and Padres tied for the WC1 spot. The only team left behind the line with a pulse is the Arizona Diamondbacks, but their pulse is quite faint. The D'Backs sit four games out with six to play, and they basically need to win out and hope that two of the three teams fall off. The Diamondbacks will be on the road to end the regular season--three in Denver followed by three in San Diego.

Regarding magic numbers, because the Cubs won the season series over Arizona, their magic number to get into the postseason: one. The Padres' magic number is currently at two, while the Phillies have a magic number of three. The Cubs and Padres could each clinch spots as early as Tuesday, while Philly can get in as early as Wednesday. The Cubs will host the Marlins next, the Phillies will host the Brewers, while the Padres will be in LA against the Dodgers.

The American League still has a lot to put together, but here's the story entering the final week. Three postseason spots are clinched, all in the East. The Rays, Yankees, and now the Red Sox are postseason bound, with Boston clinching on September 20. Regarding the division race, it's over. The Rays are six up on the Yankees with seven to play, and the clubs have a makeshift four-game set in NY that will kick off with a doubleheader on Tuesday. If the Rays win just once, they'll win the AL East, reducing the Yankees to a Wild Card. However, the Yankees are one way away from at least locking up the WC1 position, which is a home field position.

As for the rest:

The American League Central has turned in the last couple weeks. The Chicago White Sox had been in control of the division for months, but their recent skid has seen them surpassed by the Cleveland Guardians for the division lead. It is nice to see this rivalry take center stage in the division again. The White Sox won the season series, but it's the Guardians who lead the Central by a game. Cleveland's magic number to get into the postseason is three, and they'll be in Boston for a three game set. Their magic number to win the Central is six. As for the White Sox, their magic number to get into the postseason--after back-to-back disastrous seasons--is four. The Southsiders head to Kansas City next.

There's a week left, and no one in the American League West has a winning record. Not only is the AL West continuing to serve as MLB's version of the NFC South, we also have a new leader. The Texas Rangers, at 78-78, capitalized on the Houston Astros' struggles (Houston has lost seven of nine) and moved into the AL West lead by a single game. The Rangers haven't reached the postseason in either of the two seasons that passed since they won the World Series in 2023. Their magic number to win the West is six, and they'll host the Mets before heading to Minnesota. As for the Astros, they have a two game set in Seattle, followed by four games in Sacramento.

Of course, I have to mention the three teams who are hanging by a thread: the Blue Jays, Orioles, and Mariners. Two of those three teams served as the ALCS matchup last year, and now, they enter the final week running out of time. The Mariners are actually eliminated from the Wild Card race, but not the division, though they are a loss or a Rangers win from being totally done. As for the Jays and O's, they will face each other in three game set, though both teams could be eliminated before the week's out.

168 hours. Seven days. Only one short week remains in this wild 2026 season. It's amazing. It seems like yesterday that we welcomed this season. Now? We are at the beginning of the end, with the postseason set to start next Tuesday!
