Is Current Spurs Team Already One of the Franchise's Greatest?
How today's electrifying squad adds up against Spurs dynasties of legend.

For a franchise that built its reputation on sustained excellence rather than fleeting brilliance, the San Antonio Spurs are no strangers to greatness.
From the gritty, defense-first identity of the Tim Duncan era to the fluid ball movement that dazzled the league in 2014, Spurs history is layered with championship DNA. Yet a new question is beginning to circulate around the NBA: is the current iteration of the Spurs already on track to join—or even surpass—those storied teams?
It’s a bold proposition, especially when weighed against five championship banners and nearly two decades of perennial contention. But as the modern Spurs electrify fans with a blend of youth, creativity, and innovation, comparisons feel not only inevitable but essential.
A New Era, A Familiar Excellence
The present Spurs roster has captured league-wide attention with a style that feels both fresh and deeply rooted in the franchise's identity. At its core is a commitment to unselfish play, positional versatility, and intelligent defense—the legendary values of former Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich and his long-standing philosophy on good basketball.
Popovich (who is now President of Basketball Operations for the Spurs) spoke during the early stages of the Spurs’ youth movement and emphasized the developmental nature of the current group.
“When a team is [this] young… we’re going to be all over the map. We’re going to lose big some nights and win other nights," Popovich told Sports Illustrated in a 2023 interview.
That honesty underscores both the volatility and the promise of the current Spurs. They are still forming their identity—but doing so within a framework that has historically yielded greatness. Even amid inconsistency, the organization has stayed committed to competing rather than cutting corners in a rebuild. As Popovich told ESPN in 2022:
“It’s just not who we are… We’re going to go ahead and compete.”
That ethos provides continuity between eras, even as the style evolves.
Measuring Against the Duncan Dynasty
Any discussion of Spurs greatness must begin with the Tim Duncan era, which delivered five championships and defined basketball excellence in San Antonio.
The current Spurs, of course, lack the defining hardware-for now. But Popovich has cautioned against rushing a rebuild into premature expectations. In an early 2024 interview with L’Equipe, he reminded observers that greatness takes time:
“You can’t skip stages. It takes time to build a team," said the Naismith Hall of Fame inductee.
"When they see us draft someone like Victor [Wembanyama], everyone knows he’s talented. But it’s not just about talent. Michael Jordan’s first title came in his seventh year. Nikola Jokic just won his first ring, and it took him eight years," he continued.
This perspective reframes the comparison. The Duncan-era Spurs were not built overnight; they were cultivated through patience, discipline, and internal growth—the same qualities the current roster is attempting to develop. There is also a structural similarity: Both eras rely heavily on culture over individual stardom. Popovich’s long-standing philosophy of unselfishness reinforces this.
That collective identity remains a defining trait across generations.
Echoes of the 2014 Masterpiece
If the Duncan era represents sustained greatness, the 2014 championship team represents aesthetic perfection. That Spurs team’s ball movement and chemistry produced one of the most admired styles in NBA history.
While today’s Spurs operate in a faster, more modern system, the core principles remain familiar. Popovich has long defined “playing the right way." That same edict is evident in the current squad’s willingness to share the ball and lean into collective success rather than individual statistics.
However, the modern team incorporates more improvisation and individual shot creation—reflecting broader changes in the NBA. If the 2014 Spurs were precision engineering, today’s group is controlled experimentation.
Cultural Continuity: The Spurs Way Lives On
Perhaps the most compelling argument for this team’s historical potential lies in its preservation of Spurs culture.
Even during difficult rebuilding seasons, Popovich found value in teaching fundamentals and reinforcing identity. “It’s back to the drawing board and doing drills that high school kids are doing," he said in a 2023 interview with Sports Illustrated. Popovich's quote reflected a willingness to strip things down and rebuild from first principles—a process that prioritizes long-term excellence over short-term gains.
The Spurs’ culture has always emphasized accountability, especially from its leaders. Popovich once explained how even stars were held to the highest standard.
“If you do that and they respond in the right way, everyone else follows suit," Popovich is quoted as saying in an interview excerpt published in Forces of Character: Conversations about Building a Life of Impact, a book by Chad Hennings and Jon Finkel.
For today’s young Spurs roster, those lessons are foundational. Culture, not talent alone, is what historically separated Spurs champions from merely good teams.
A Legacy Still Being Written
It may be premature to rank this team alongside the Duncan dynasties or the 2014 masterpiece.
But the ingredients are unmistakably present: A strong culture, a commitment to team basketball, and a developmental pathway grounded in patience. Popovich has consistently emphasized (and current Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson is masterfully reinforcing) that growth is a process, not a shortcut. And if history is any indication, the Spurs’ method—steady, disciplined, and unselfish—has a way of producing greatness over time.
This team has not yet earned its place among legends. But in San Antonio, the blueprint is familiar—and the early chapters suggest that a winning formula is once again taking shape.
