In a Ronda Rousey-less world, where ratings are somewhat normal by MMA standards. When the world of Boxing has no real superstar headliner to turn to. Living in a society where robot fighting and fighter genre video games will probably be larger sporting draws in the near future, who does the world have to depend on? Two of combat sports biggest stars, if not their biggest, in Conor McGregor and Floyd “Money” Mayweather, that’s who.

The rumors have swirled for quite some time now about a potential “big money” fight, pitting the world class prize fighter against the world renowned and long time martial artist. There was actually talk that started to sneak through the grapevines as recent as a month ago that they had actually reached an agreement or started to, but that proved to be a farce. Well, Money Mayweather has a message, a challenge, and has clearly taken a position.

Well played Mr. Mayweather. Mr. McGregor, your move boss.

This is all well and good, however, as noted above McGregor would need to make the necessary moves as well to make the whole thing happen. That leads one to wonder however, does the world even still want this fight? The answer is yes. People that are fans of either sport, Boxing or MMA alike, are starving for a big fight or anything resembling one. Now although fans might be against gimmicks, such as this one, this is a fight that would pit the two most perfect people for this type of match against each other. They both are very technically gifted and skilled in their crafts, they are both above average athletes, they both have the heart of a lion, and they are both very cocky. This also leads to another interesting tidbit, and that is the fact that the two sports need this right now in the worst way.

Having no real “superstars” to sell in either sport, both would love and need this McGregor/Mayweather fight to happen, and soon. Some would point to “GGG”, Gennady Golovkin, or Andre Ward but neither has elevated themselves to superstar status. Being without superstars, and thus major personalities that market and/or sell themselves, they need this fight badly. In order for either to think about winning though, they will have to “play” the fight so that it trends more towards their particular and preferred skillsets. This of course means Mayweather must “counter” and make it as much of a boxing match as anything, and McGregor has to try and grab a hold of Mayweather at every opportunity if he wants any chance. Of course this is all based on the details and rules of the fight, providing they are allowed to use any of their skillsets freely.

If the fight were to happen, I believe that Mayweather would win it. I believe he is too smart not to set the match up to cater more towards him, and furthermore he is just too good at what he does. I won’t hold my breath in waiting for it, however, I would be willing to drop a few dollars to see it, perhaps.
