Dana White Refuses to Contact Jon Jones After Doping Violation

Could Jones be terminated from the UFC, not just UFC 200?

The latest news of Jon "Bones" Jones being removed from the main card of UFC 200 has come with some unforeseen consequences, for Jones that is. Since his removal from the fight on Wednesday (July 6th), many have questioned why Jones was removed, and now that the whole story is out on Jon Jones being removed from the fight for a doping violation, Jones could be in for more than he bargained for when he decided to ingest banned supplements during training for his fight with Cormier at UFC 200. Jon Jones was originally placed at the top of the main card against Daniel Cormier in a match-up that would have united the two Interim UFC Light-Heavyweight titles. Jones now has more to think about than training for a fight, he has to contend with possible sanctions imposed by the USADA, impeding his ability to fight for up to two years.

Sometime during training for his fight with Cormier at UFC 200, Jon Jones took a supplement which contained a banned substance, known by the USADA as a performance enhancing drug. According to the reasoning provided by USADA for why Jones was removed from his fight at UFC 200, Jones failed a drug test administered on June 16th, to which he tested positive for a banned substance found in supplements taken by the fighter. There has been no clarification as to which substance is being eyed as the culprit for Jones' failed test, but it's pretty clear that UFC President, Dana White isn't too happy about Jones' failed test either way.

UFC President, Dana White comments on Jon Jones doping violation.

White made a statement during an interview with Fox Sports today on Jones' recent setback, and he isn't looking to back Jones up at all. Here's what Dana White had to say on the matter.

I don’t know where (UFC owner/chairman) Lorenzo (Fertitta) is on this issue but I still haven’t talked to Jon Jones.

Just from that line, we can see that Dana White isn't happy at all with Jones right now. And while that's the least of White's remarks towards Jones, Dana White could be saying something else entirely when it comes to Jon Jones' career in the UFC. Here are the rest of Dana White's comments on Jones testing positive for substances banned by USADA.

The guy is a professional ... I’m not the biggest Jon Jones fan right now but I truly believe that he did take a supplement that had this stuff in it and it wasn’t intentional. I truly believe that.
But at the same time, come on. You’re 28 years-old, you’re probably the greatest talent to ever set foot in this sport, right. Call USADA to tell them what supplements you’re taking.

You’ve already been through this history of just absolute madness. Why would you do this?
Forget doing it to us ... why would you do this to yourself? You’re a grown-up.
And the guys that are around him are just as bad. The guys who are supposed to be looking out for him and watching his back and making sure ... give me a break, give me a break.”

Could there be more for Jon Jones to deal with, past sanctions imposed by USADA?

While these comments by White are just bringing the hurt down more on Jones, Jones knows of the huge mistake he's made. Jones was somber and quite emotional during the Thursday press conference in which he announced his withdrawal from the fight at UFC 200. He made several apologies to the people he has disappointed by failing the drug test administered by USADA, including an apology to his opponent, Daniel Cormier, whom Jones has faced with contention in the past. Despite this major roadblock hitting Jones' career in the UFC, Jones could use this setback as an opportunity to get his act together in order to return to the UFC. However, Jones may have used his last chance at becoming a legend of the UFC with his removal from the UFC 200 card potentially endangering his MMA career altogether.

Now that Jones' tests, Sample A and B have both been confirmed positive for the illicit substance, Jones faces a potential suspension of up to two years, as well as being stripped of his Interim UFC Light-Heavyweight title. But past all the sanctions, Dana White's words on the matter may have more impact on Jones' career in the UFC than do the sanctions imposed on Jones by USADA.

There's more to what Dana White is saying by not talking to Jon Jones on the matter but he may not be able to say exactly what he wants to on camera, at the moment. We can assume there have been talks between Jones and White behind closed doors but it appears that White's public statement of not discussing the matter with Jones may be hinting at an even more unforeseen consequence for Jones to have to deal with in the aftermath of Jones' latest setback.

By publicly stating his inaction towards getting Jones back into the octagon, Dana White may be over promoting Jon "Bones" Jones in the UFC. The decision isn't entirely up to Dana White, but if Dana White doesn't want Jon Jones fighting for the UFC, it'll probably turn out that way. (And yes we could make the argument that Jon Jones could appear on another fight circuit in the future, outside of the UFC promotion, despite his past being detrimental to his future fighting for any other promotion.) However, Jon Jones will likely attempt to make amends with Dana White in order to retain his place as one of the best fighters in the world, within the UFC octagon that is. But it may be too late for Jones.

Jones is known to have a checkered past in regards to failing drug tests, and testing positive for illicit substances. And while Jones has been given many opportunities to come back from those setbacks, he may have hit the brick-wall from which there is no return with his most recent failure.

Is Jon Jones out of the UFC for good this time?

No one can say whether or not Jones will return to the UFC. But in all likeliness, USADA is going to hold Jones responsible for the doping violation, while at the same time imposing the sanctions necessary on Jones for the violation. In doing so, Jon Jones could be suspended for a time length up to two years, in which many events in the UFC could overshadow Jones' former spotlight to where he's no longer a fighter sought after by fans. In that scenario, Jones' suspension from the UFC could be foreshadowing his complete removal from the sport altogether. We won't know of Jones' fate until USADA decides to make a statement in regards to Jon Jones latest tests, but it's safe to assume that they are going to hold Jones liable for the mistake he's made, despite another party being guilty of the offense on Jones' behalf. Jones recently returned to the UFC after another suspension, due to another instance of doping violations, in which he tested positive for cocaine use in December of 2015. Jon Jones' checkered past could have finally caught up to him despite taking the time to work past his historical mistakes. Although, we can always hope for the best when USADA makes their determination of Jones' fate beyond UFC 200.

Tomorrow night's event of UFC 200 will go on as planned but with a slight change to the main card, wherein Anderson Silva is taking Jones' place as Daniel Cormier's opponent in a non-title fight on the main card.

What are your opinions on the matter? Should Jon Jones be suspended for the entire two year length? Should he be given a different reprimand for his actions? Or should his camp and the parties involved be held responsible for giving Jones tainted supplements. Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
