CFL Week 9 Recap: Total Domination
Dominant results in Week 9, as the season enters the month of August

Week 8 brought the 2026 CFL season into the heart of the schedule, but Week 9 was a slow transition into the month of August. August is the final full month of summer, but to us sports fans, it's the final full month of what I call, "The Lull." July is the quietest sports month of the year, as it's mostly baseball (especially the All-Star Game) and early CFL. As for the month of August, it's a good month for us. It's the final full month before the NFL starts. In baseball, it's the last month before the final month. Thanks to the NHL season being 84 games, August is the final full month before that starts. As for the CFL, August serves as the CFL's exact midpoint, and also served as a countdown to the league's annual Labour Day rivalry games.
Week 9 began on the penultimate day of July with the BC Lions getting a much needed win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who are up and down so far. 35-19 was the final score in BC's favor, only two wins for the Lions but both inside the division. On the final day of July, the Montréal Alouettes soundly defeated the Ottawa Redblacks, and yeah, Als are finishing first in the East. As for the Redblacks, it just keeps getting worse and worse, my goodness.
The month of August began with a very welcome sight for us Argos fans: the Hamilton Tiger-Cats being blasted at home by the Calgary Stampeders. 44-20 was the final score, making the idle Argos very elated. After that, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Edmonton Elks battle for the second straight week, and just like the last meeting, it was a close one. Unlike the last meeting, the Riders won it, 28-26, making things very interesting in the West Division.
How interesting, you ask?

It's getting a bit hot for the Elks right now. The Riders' big road win over the Elks has moved them withing a half game of the division lead, but they have a long wait for the rubber match. That third and final meeting won't happen until October 24, the final week of the season. The Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are both 4-4, and the BC Lions improve to 2-5. In the East, well, it's over. The Montréal Alouettes will finish first in the division, as they stand at 7-1, while the three Ontario franchises don't have that many wins combined. At least the Argonauts are in second place, that means a home playoff game, but the battle between us and the Tiger-Cats is a close one.
Week 10 (man, time flies) starts with the Argos finally at home for the first time all season against the Calgary Stampeders on Thursday, August 6. On Friday, August 7, the Saskatchewan Roughriders will host the winless (and hopeless) Ottawa Redblacks (on CBS Sports Network). And on Saturday, August 8, it's a doubleheader; first, the Edmonton Elks and the Montréal Alouettes in a battle between first place teams (which should be very epic), and finally, the BC Lions hosting the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (on CBS Sports Network) in a battle between the only two teams who haven't won a Grey Cup since I started watching the CFL back in 2013. This should be a very interesting week in the CFL--the first full CFL week in the month of August.
