CFL Week 4 Recap: Clash of Champions

Week 4 of the CFL season included a battle between the last two Grey Cup Champions

The 2026 Canadian Football League season entered the final weekend of June, and it was the first week this season to feature four games in as many days, with CBS Sports Network airing three of Week 4's games in the States. The week started with the one game that wasn't on CBSSN: the West Division battle between the Edmonton Elks and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. This was moderately low-scoring but close, and it was a very late touchdown that put the Elks on top. A two-point attempt came up short, but the Elks held on to win it, 23-18. The Elks are off to quite the start!

So that was the Thursday battle, and regarding Friday Night Football, it was the Toronto Argonauts and the Saskatchewan Roughriders facing each other. A very fitting occurrence. On the four-year anniversary of the Colorado Avalanche's most recent Stanley Cup, the CFL featured a battle between the two most recent Grey Cup Champions. And as expected, this was a battle! The Argos and Riders went back and forth, scoring at will, but in the end, the Argos--the 2024 Champs--prevailed. 40-34, the Argos scoring 10 points a quarter! That's back-t0-back wins for the Argos!

This wouldn't be the only high-scoring battle of Week 4. Saturday's Western battle between the Calgary Stampeders and the BC Lions--both of whom looking for their first win of the season, was an offence-filled battle that ended with the Stamps victorious by a score of 41-33, continuing to prove what I've said for a while: the West games are always high-scoring and heated. Finally, Sunday evening featured an Eastern battle between the Ottawa Redblacks and the Montréal Alouettes, and this game saw the Als appears to run away with this, but Ottawa made it quite close.

And there's the standings after four weeks. Who had the Edmonton Elks as the only unbeaten team left? It's been a good few days for Edmonton: the Elks are 3-0, and the Oilers found a sucker to take Darnell Nurse and the rest of that albatross contract (seriously, the guy's making more than Cale Makar!). The Saskatchewan Roughriders' first loss of the season dropped them to 2-1, but they are still second in the West. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Calgary Stampeders are both 1-2, while the BC Lions are still looking for their first win of this season. Very close in the West, but that's because it's early in the year.

As for the East, the Montréal Alouettes are on top of the division at 3-1, while the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (the latter being idle in Week 4) are both 2-1, with the Argos winning back-to-back games. The Ottawa Redblacks are still looking for their first win of 2026, and two of their losses re inside their division.

We have 17 weeks to go, and Week 5 will see the CFL's annual Canada Day celebration (belated this year). On Thursday, July 2, the Calgary Stampeders will host the Toronto Argonauts (that game will air on CBSSN in the States). On Friday, July 3, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Ottawa Redblacks will face each other, while Saturday, July 4 will see the Edmonton Elks and the BC Lions face off in a Western battle. On Sunday, July 5, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will battle against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which will also air on CBSSN here in the States.
