CFL Week 2 Recap: The Bright Side
Week 2 sees the defending Grey Cup Champions raise the banner and start their season

I have my usual reason for looking forward to the Canadian Football League season: because I do need another summer sport other than baseball. Week 2 was the last time that the CFL clashed with multiple leagues, but now that the NBA, NHL, and UFL have crowned champions, we are now in what I call, "The Lull." The Lull is basically the summer season, that period where, following the Stanley Cup and the Larry O'Brien Trophy are awarded, it's nothing but baseball until the second week of September. Yes, I know there's preseason NFL in August, but honestly, that's part of The Lull.
To many sports fans, this current period is the most boring part of the sports calendar. I don't consider it boring; yes, baseball is the most quiet of the four sports, but I do like baseball. However, sports fans can't live on baseball alone, and when I learned about the CFL and when it takes place, I had to dive in. We are now in Week 2, and that brings me to another reason why I was eager for this season: the Toronto Argonauts.
Last year was a disaster for the Argos. We were the defending champions, but everything went wrong for this team. A 5-13 season; somehow Ottawa was worse. The only good thing about seasons that bad: we have nowhere else to go but up. Our 2026 season started in Montréal against the Alouettes, and that's been the top rivalry in the East Division in recent years. The Argos did look good, but not good enough. A strong Alouettes fourth quarter ended up being the difference, and the Alouettes went on to win, 37-30, to increase to 2-0 in this young season.
The Argos/Alouettes clash was the Friday game of a three-game Week 2. The second week actually kicked off with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers hosting the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who definitely delivered against the Bombers en route to their first win of 2026--a 37-27 victory over Winnipeg. The finale took place on Saturday, and saw the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the BC Lions (two teams who were not part of Opening Week) face each other in a Western battle. For the Riders, they celebrated their Grey Cup Championship and raised the banner before narrowly edging the Lion, 31-27.

Here are the standings after two weeks, and I have a bone to pick. The CFL got rid of ties, right? So why are they still doing a point system if there's only one way to get points in the standings? Unless you do like the NHL and award a point just for getting to overtime, I say do away with standings points. Regardless, the West shows the Elks and Roughriders at 1-0, the Blue Bombers at 1-1, and the Stampeders and Lions looking for their first win. In the East, the Alouettes stand at 2-0 already, the Tiger-Cats are 1-1 and the Argos and Redblacks are looking for win #1. It's a long season, folks. There's still 19 weeks to go.
Week 3 begins on Friday, June 19 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats hosting the BC Lions, and that's followed by a tripleheader on Saturday, June 20. First off, the Ottawa Redblacks host the Toronto Argonauts. Next, the Edmonton Elks and the Montréal Alouettes face off, and finally, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Calgary Stampeders engage in a West Division battle.
