A Sprinter Won Two Golds. A Swimmer Won Seven. The MVP Went to the Sprinter.
Boonson set a Games record in the 100m and equaled the Asian record in the 200m. Zhang Zhanshuo won seven golds. The OCA picked Boonson anyway.

One day before the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games closed, Thai outlet siamsport reported that 20-year-old sprinter Boonson had won men's MVP and $25,000. The Olympic Council of Asia had not announced it yet. The ceremony was set for October 4.
On October 4, the OCA made it official. Boonson won men's MVP. Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi, 13, won women's MVP. The result did not end the argument. A sprinter with two golds and one silver had beaten a swimmer with seven golds and a 44-year-old record.
The scorecards
Boonson broke 10 seconds in all three rounds of the men's 100m. He won the final in 9.90, set a Games record, and was the only finalist under 10 seconds. In the 200m final, he ran 19.88 in the rain, equaling Xie Zhenye's 2019 Asian record. He also won silver with Thailand's mixed 4x100m relay.
Zhang Zhanshuo entered eight events and won seven golds. He became the first swimmer to win seven golds at one Asian Games. He matched North Korean shooter So Gil-san's 1982 record for individual golds at a single Asian Games. His golds included the 200m freestyle (Asian record), 400m freestyle (Games record), 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle, and three relays. In the 4x200m freestyle relay, China won in 7:00.17, breaking the Asian record. Zhang swam the anchor leg and passed Japan, splitting 2.77 seconds faster than his rival.
Seven golds against two. That gap is the argument.
How the MVP is chosen
The OCA says a five-member panel each picks the best athlete. Judges look at world records, Asian records, Asian Games records, and gold medals. Gold count is one item on the list, not the whole list.
The panel included OCA Sports Committee chair Song Luzeng and OCA Athletes Committee chair Ding Ning. China held two of the five seats. The award has never been a simple gold count. In 1998, the first MVP went to Japanese sprinter Koji Ito. In 2010, Lin Dan won with men's singles and team gold. In 2023, Qin Haiyang beat several athletes with more golds. Voters have favored breakthrough performances and event reach.
Boonson had both. The 100m is track and field's most visible threshold. Three rounds under 10 seconds, with a 9.90 final, is competitive at the world level. His 200m equaled an Asian record. Thai media noted that running three rounds under 9.95 in the 100m is something Su Bingtian never did.
The men's 100m and 200m draw global attention. A 9.90 from an Asian sprinter carries more weight than a gold in a smaller swimming event.
Why Ohashi Shin did not win
Seventeen-year-old Ohashi Shin swam 2:04.83 in the men's 200m breaststroke. He broke Qin Haiyang's world record and beat the silver medalist by 3.84 seconds. A world record normally outranks an Asian record. Ohashi was also a host-nation athlete.
He still did not win. The 200m breaststroke is not one of swimming's biggest events. The 100m final is the centerpiece of any multi-sport Games. Ohashi had two golds, same as Boonson. His total of two golds, two silvers, and one bronze was better. He lacked the global attention of a 100m final. Voters weigh both the record and the stage.
The leak
Thai media had the result on October 2. The OCA tells the winning delegation early so it can prepare for the ceremony. A Thai reporter got the information through that channel.
The leak killed the closing ceremony's main surprise. The OCA planned a final reveal. Social media and early reporting took that away. For organizers, it exposed a gap in information control. When many people must coordinate, how do you keep a secret? For media, an early scoop can win traffic and damage relationships with event officials.
What the vote says about Asian sport
Boonson is the first male MVP from outside China, Japan, and South Korea in the award's 28-year history.
From 1998 to 2023, the winners came almost entirely from those three countries: Koji Ito (Japan), Kosuke Kitajima (Japan), Park Tae-hwan (South Korea), Lin Dan (China), Kosuke Hagino (Japan), Rikako Ikee (Japan), and Qin Haiyang and Zhang Yufei (China).
Boonson breaks that pattern. It is a first for Thai sport. It is also a choice by the OCA to recognize talent beyond the traditional powers. In an event long dominated by a few nations, giving the top individual honor to a Southeast Asian sprinter says the award is not only about gold counts.
Zhang Zhanshuo did not talk about MVP. He said, "The Asian Games is not the end. My goal is the Olympics."
The argument will fade. The question remains: should an MVP award honor the most golds or the most memorable performance? The OCA voted. Fans can disagree.
