A Screen Capture From When Marjorie Roden Interviewed Brandon Tanev After the Game March 27, 2018

WRITER'S NOTE: I submitted this for another paper, but as there wasn't room for it, it was not used. As people have been asking me what I did write up for this particular NHL hockey game, I felt I might as well publish it here, and get some feedback. Apologies to any Jets' fans for the lateness of this getting made public for reading. And yes I always do my nails blue, hence why I chose the graphic I did to accompany this story.

For the fourth straight game, the Winnipeg Jets needed extra time to pave their way to victory on their way to the playoffs, as they won over the Boston Bruins in a sudden death shootout 5 to 4 on Tuesday evening. The game also included scoring from the checking line, which saw left winger Brandon Tanev (donning jersey #13) scoring his first career NHL hat trick.

In the first period, the Jets opened the scoring at 5:33 with the first goal from Tanev. The goal was challenged by the Bruins, but the goal stood. It looked like the Jets were going to keep the lead until the Bruin’s Ryan Donato tore in on a breakaway and beat the Jets’ goalie Hellebuyck in a one-on-one battle, and the game was tied at the end of the first.

The goal was answered by Tanev at the 16-second mark of the second as he beat Bruins goaltender on the glove-hand side of Anton Khudobin, putting the home team back in front. The Jets extended their lead on another even strength marker by Joe Morrow at 6:25. The frame ended with some heavy hitting from both sides. This included the Jets’ Josh Morrissey being slammed with a 5 minute major for boarding as he took down the Bruins’ Matt Grzelcyk in the Bruins’ zone right at the buzzer.

The Jets wound up paying grandly for Morrissey’s major as the Bruins scored 2 goals while the Jets were shorthanded, one at 1:45 by Danton Heinen. The second, while on a two-man advantage created by the Jets challenging the previous goal for having been scored on an off-side play, saw 3:36 the Bruins’ David Pastrnak tie up the game for the visiting team.

Tanev responded 53 seconds later with a short-handed goal scored on the wraparound, completing his hat trick, putting the home team ahead. Unfortunately, the Jets’ Scheifele was given a cross-checking minor, allowing the Bruins' Torey Krug the leeway to tie the game up on the power play, sending the game into overtime. Nothing was decided in the 5 minute, 3-on-3 period, so the shootout saw the Jets’ Patrick Laine eventually win it for the Jets on the team’s fourth shot.

Jet’s captain Blake Wheeler had nothing but praise for Tanev, stating, “I just feel so happy for him. To see a guy like Tanny come in and have a big night, I’m sure he’s going to remember that for a long time, and that’s as excited as I’ve seen the bench all year.”

When asked about Tanev’s short-handed marker, Wheeler said, “That was big. It’s tough to come into a period killing a five minute penalty, and it’s tough to go five on three as well, so to respond and get the momentum back was a big moment.”

When asked about it, Tanev was humble about his third goal.

“Adam (Lowry) made a huge play on the wall, the puck came to me, and I just tried to kind of wait out the goalie,” said Tanev, adding, “I was fortunate enough to get a bounce, the puck squeaked through his pads, and in that situation you take a puck to the net and hope everything goes your way.”

The Jets head coach Paul Maurice, when asked about Tanev’s hat trick, responded, “If it’s not a guy who’s here to score goals, and he gets a hat trick, everyone loves it five times as much.”
