Saving energy saves the planet at the same time it saves your bank account. Whether you're looking to cut costs or looking to help reduce your carbon footprint, energy saving is a philosophy you can take with you wherever you go.

At Home

Most people know to turn off the lights when they're not using them. You may even know that you can, and should, replace your lightbulbs with energy efficient models that reduce your energy consumption. There are many other appliances that can be replaced with more energy efficient models, such as getting a new fridge and water softener. Any little thing you can do that reduces your energy consumption will help reduce your carbon footprint and help save the planet. Perhaps the most important thing you can do at home is ask your electrical company, your local representatives and your local homeowner's association what they are doing to help encourage green initiatives and eco-friendly measures.

On Vacation

The energy saving doesn't stop when you leave home either. Every time you go on vacation for an extended length of time, it's a good idea to turn off and even unplug your electronics. This stops them from draining small bits of power while you're away, but it's also a good safety and security measure. If there's a power surge or a lightning strike, you don't have to worry about your electronics getting damaged. In addition to keeping your home safe while you're away, you can also make the trip itself more environmentally friendly by looking into eco-tourist options and choosing more environmentally-friendly methods of travel.

At Work

Almost all the things you do at work, you can also do at your place of business. Turning off the lights when you leave a room at home is a great way to save energy, and installing and using a disconnect switch at work can do the same thing on a larger scale. Your workplace has collective power and you can use that collective power to do real good in the world through fundraising, investing and other projects. Taking steps to be eco-friendly can generate buzz and good press for your business. People go out of their way to find eco-friendly products, after all.

At the Store

In fact, you should aspire to be the kind of person who does just that. The money you safe through investing in energy efficient technology can be reinvested in green products whenever you go to the store. Many people know to look for organic and sustainably produced food. They know that buying local is better for your local economy and your planet, but that applies to more than food. Buying from consignment stores, for example, reduces the need for sweatshops and the constant production like of fast fashion. Repairing rather than replacing your electronics can keep harmful e-waste out of landfills.

In the Future

Saving the planet isn't a one-and-done kind of thing. It's a lifestyle that you need to make sure continues into the future. Plan ahead and think green when you do that. Make your next car a hybrid or an electric car, if you can. Research the costs and benefits of putting solar panels on your home. Read up on your local representatives' plans for the environment. Make sure you know who to vote for before the election comes. Teach your children these values to ensure that they know how important this is. After all, it's their world that you're taking steps to save.

Saving energy to help save the planet needs a holistic approach. Just doing one thing to reduce energy consumption in one area does help, of course. Every little bit helps, but doing a lot of little bits in every area of your life helps most of all. So whether you're at home, at work, on vacation, doing the shopping or moving forward into the future, you should always be thinking about what little things you can do to save energy and save the planet.
