Putin has walked down a dangerous path with no return.

First and foremost, Putin's unprovoked attack on Ukraine has deeply affected the World. Putin’s implied threat of using nuclear warheads places a gun on the heads of world leaders. The world is held hostage. Putin is probably gloating over this political move. But world leaders will not forgive or forget.

Innocent lives are lost in Ukraine. The Russian media is thwarting the story to its Russian viewers to make the invasion palatable, acceptable, and justifiable. Understandably, Ukraine is facing its darkest hour at the hands of Putin. Families were lost, tortured, and killed by Russian troops, special forces, and senseless bombardment. The Russian people are being censored and fed misinformation about Putin's invasion. I'm afraid that so many atrocities will have occurred that the Russian people will be forced into denial rather than admit that they allowed themselves to be duped into believing Putin's propaganda. Putin will have to answer to his people and the World.

Putin will fall in June.

Wishful thinking, I think not. President Biden is playing two cards expertly. Everyone thinks NATO should do more and rush in to help Ukraine. NATO is buying time to get all the resources into play by gathering information and establishing logistics and supplies around Ukraine. Stealth drones document Russian positions and movements. Naval forces are gathering from all sides in reaction to the Ukrainian Invasion. The gathering of naval forces in international waters around Russia may not make Putin flinch but is making China very uncomfortable. Biden may be more interested in having US naval forces close to Russia, not only to make Putin aware of US disapproval but also to deter China's expansionists plans. China has plans for maritime expansion to the East; those plans have been convoluted by Putin's Invasions. Biden can justify his Pacific fleet concentration to the East. Now on the world stage, the discussion of a pro-Western alliance involving the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan has been accelerated. Taiwan has become the favorite child of the pro-democracy Pacific nations of Korea, Japan, Australia, the UK, Canada, and the US. President Xi has found that his enthusiasm to stand next to Putin has set back his expansionist plans for South-Eastern Asia.

The Second card is the Financial card. It is the Joker in the deck of Detente. It disrupts everyone's hand at the geopolitical card table. Putin is searching the deck for that card to get him on top in the game, but he is struggling to find it. In the meantime, Biden just tossed the Joker and is waiting, and that is the beauty of the move; the more he waits the more effective it becomes. What is the Joker; It is Interest rates. He has stopped essential trade within and without Russia. Monetary exchange between Russia and the World has been severed. Loans and payments will default, and in 2022, interest rates will incrementally accelerate three or four times. Russia's financial integrity will fall into a state of irreparable harm. Before the Russian invasion, the GDP of Russia was 85th in the World. Not very high for a presumed economic superpower. The GDP per capita for Russia was ranked 57th in the World in 2017 at $25,763. To place it in perspective, Greece was higher with $28,583 with a ranking of 51 (GDP Capita data from world meter website). Russia's financial foundation will disintegrate. Financial engineering against this is too complicated for Putin to undo or remedy. China, faced with its own financial Sword of Damocles, can ill afford higher rates with the Evergrande and the real estate time bomb that they are gingerly trying to avert. On top of the Zero tolerance Covid unrest in Shanghai, President Xi can ill afford a financial debacle at this moment. President Xi will be reluctant to stand next to Putin in the future.

All in all, Biden has strengthened and will ultimately expand NATO this decade. He has set the gears to create a NATO-like alliance involving South Korea, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and the United States. And if China resists, Damocles's sword hangs over Xi in the form of trade sanctions and interest rate hikes.
