He studied law at the University of Calabar and was supposed to wear a wig and gown in court. Instead, he put on costumes and stood in front of cameras, and for more than a decade, his face became one of the most recognised in Nigerian cinema. On Monday, May 11, 2026, actor Alexx Ekubo died in Lagos at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with kidney cancer. The Nollywood industry, his colleagues, and millions of fans across Nigeria and the diaspora have been in shock ever since.

Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke was born on April 10, 1986, in Arochukwu, Abia State. He grew up attending Federal Government College Daura in Katsina State — a detail that speaks to a childhood spent crossing different parts of Nigeria, the kind of experience that shapes a person’s ability to inhabit different characters on screen. He finished his law degree at the University of Calabar and was called to the bar, but law never captured him the way entertainment did. In 2010, almost by accident — he had received a last-minute message from a friend about the Mr. Nigeria competition, was nearly derailed by a car accident on the way to register, and still showed up — he entered the pageant and emerged as first runner-up. That result changed his life. It gave him national visibility, helped build the stylish, confident public image he would maintain throughout his career, and opened the doors to Nollywood.

His breakthrough came with Weekend Getaway, a romantic comedy that showed his range and his chemistry with other actors. From there, he never stopped working. The Bling Lagosians, A Sunday Affair, Ladies Gang, Champagne, Single, Married and Complicated — the list of productions he was part of stretches across more than a decade of Nigerian film and television. He was named among the “Most Influential People of African Descent” under 40 in 2020. He won the Global Social Giving Actor of the Year award in 2021. He was made a Rotary Youth Ambassador in 2023. He appeared on best-dressed lists across Africa consistently, becoming one of those rare entertainers whose influence extended into fashion and philanthropy as naturally as it did into acting.

Then, in late 2024, he went quiet. His last Instagram post came in December 2024, around the same time reports emerged that his engagement to U.S.-based model Fancy Acholonu had ended. He disappeared from public events. Colleagues and fans noticed but respected his privacy. What was not publicly known until after his death was that he had been fighting kidney cancer for months — quietly, away from cameras, in the same private manner that had always defined him even at the height of his fame.

When news of his death broke on Tuesday, the response from the Nigerian entertainment community was immediate and raw. Funke Akindele wrote on Instagram: “Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace.” Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo said: “Life is not only fickle, it can also feel unreal. Even as I type this, I still struggle to fully process it.” Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who never met Ekubo personally, wrote: “I still cannot forget a movie of his I watched on an Emirates flight from New York to Dubai en route to Nairobi. He was a rare talent whose presence lit up the screen effortlessly.”

His death at 40 has triggered a wider conversation in Nigeria about the health challenges facing young public figures, about the silence that often surrounds cancer diagnoses in a culture that does not always make space for public vulnerability, and about the speed with which a life built in the public eye can slip away privately. Several fans noted that he had been unwell in May 2025, a full year before his death, and that his prolonged absence had worried people who cared about him. His death confirmed fears that many had quietly carried.

Alexx Ekubo was a lawyer who chose to make people laugh and cry instead of argue cases. He was very good at it. Nigeria will miss him.
