My Thoughts About the 2020 Election

History was witnessed right in front of our eyes

On Saturday November 7, numerous news outlets projected that former Vice President Joe Biden won the 2020 Election by defeating incumbent President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States. He won over 74 million votes, which is a new record for the most votes, more any other president. Biden is also the oldest to win the presidency at the age of 77. He will be 78 years old when he’ll be inaugurated on January 20, 2021. In 1972, Biden was the sixth youngest senator in American history to be elected to the U.S. Senate at 29 years old. Former California Senator Kamala Harris also made history by being the first woman and the first woman of color to be chosen as Vice President.

In the months leading up to the election, President Trump had continuously made false and unproven claims about voting by mail. He’s repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that voting by mail leads to voter fraud. Also, Trump made false allegations after his loss to Joe Biden that the election was “stolen” from him. He’s filed numerous lawsuits, requesting recounts in several key states where he’s trailing Biden by thousands of votes. It’s more unlikely that these recounts will occur and him winning a second term.

The coronavirus pandemic has been the main topic that’s been on everyone’s mind this year. President Trump has been downplaying the severity of the virus for months, knowing how serious and deadly it was. When the news first broke about him testing positive for Covid-19 and spending days in the hospital, I was hoping that he would finally take the pandemic more seriously. However, I was disappointed and Trump acts like the virus is not a big deal, comparing it to the flu. If he had taken it seriously back in February when the first cases of Covid appeared in the U.S., encouraged everyone to wear masks and take other measures, the cases wouldn’t be as high as it is now. Over 10 million people have been infected with the coronavirus and around 240,000 have died from it in this country. Cases are continuing to soar and will only get worse if we don’t take the necessary measures to flatten the curve. We have to do our part to make it easier on these doctors and other health care workers working at hospitals. Trump has held huge rallies with thousands of people in attendance not wearing masks or physically distancing. To me, it was irresponsible and careless.

On the other hand, now President-elect Biden has taken the pandemic seriously. Holding drive-in rallies and small campaign events wearing a mask is the reason why many people like him. He has previously stated that he would not shut down the county, but has a plan to defeat the virus. Also, he would make masks mandatory in order to slow the spread. After the historic win, millions of people celebrated by dancing in the streets and honking their horns in their cars. By theory, we’ve experienced a lot of firsts in this election. Now that Biden has been chosen to lead our country, it’s time for President Trump to concede the election, peacefully transfer power to the incoming president, and move on. Biden will be a president that will not only lead this country, but also unite us. We’ve been waiting for that to happen for the last several years. Trump’s refusal to condemn white supremacy and other hate groups, along with making derogatory statements about different minorities, divided this country further and further. Finally, he blames other people for his actions instead of taking personal responsibility.

Under the Biden-Harris administration, we’re hoping that things will change for the better. As I’ve stated in one of my Black Lives Matter stories last summer, change has to start with us. It’s been a rough year for all of us. Besides the coronavirus outbreak taking a toll on millions of people and businesses, numerous protests against racial injustice and inequality was also the other talking point of 2020. With the deaths of numerous black people killed by police officers this year, we want these rouge cops to be held fully accountable. If we don’t hold them responsible, it’s only going to continuously give these good cops who are protecting and serving our communities a bad name. In other words, arrested, indicted, and sentenced to the fullest extent of the law. How many more black families have to suffer because of some of these rogue cops getting away with murder? Fellow police officers need to stop enabling other cops who abuse their authority and power.

In closing, we have to remind ourselves that we deserve to live happier and fulfilling lives without fear of discrimination. I’ve always been an advocate for different causes, such as LGBTQ+ rights and Black Lives Matter, especially on this platform. Whether or not you’ve voted for Joe Biden to be our next president, I believe that he’s the best person to lead our country and bring us together, something that President Trump has repeatedly failed to do. I’m looking forward to what he and Vice President-elect Harris will bring to us Americans for the next four years. This historic election is something that we’ll be talking about for many years to come.
