Back in April of 2022, news broke in Kenya after several Kenyan police completed suicide. One police officer killed 5 others. his wife then himself. Several police officers have over the last few years completed suicide and or murdered their wives or girlfriends.
This is including several reports of police brutality in Kenya. During the recent protests, some of which turned violent, ended in the deaths of Kenyans. Some claims of unnessorary force and murder, outright murder by the Kenyan police force.
About 2000 police officers in Kenya are mentally unfit to serve in the police service, Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai.
The IGP made this revelation on Tuesday during a meeting with bishops and senior clergy of the Anglican Church in Nairobi. According to him, the findings were established after medical examinations were conducted on police officers.
"We have subjected all the officers to medical examination, and to our surprise, we got a big number. We isolated almost 2,000 police officers who are unfit to do their law enforcement work," said Mutyambai in a video by local TV station NTV.
The police IG however says a process to manage some of the mentally unstable officers, has started.
He highlighted the importance of having stable officers in the service, pointing out the high risk posed especially when the officers are in the custody of guns.
During the recent protests on the cost of living in Kenya, several citizens were killed, or beaten by the police. The international community called on President William Ruto to hold them accountable, to date there has been nothing done.
What happened, basically it was the United States, Kenyans laughed a their hypocrisy and there was no more talk about those killed by the police.
Kenya: Police Use Excessive Force in Response to Anti-Government Demonstrations
From 29 July to 15 September 2023, ACLED records 125 political violence events and over 175 reported fatalities in Kenya. Political violence centered in Nairobi county, where at least 13 incidents of mob violence were recorded. Nairobi also witnessed the highest number of demonstration events in the country.
Lamu county had the highest number of reported fatalities, with nearly 95 recorded during the reporting period as al-Shabaab activity intensified in August and September, with militants targeting both civilians and security forces. Garissa county followed, with at least 16 reported fatalities. In Garissa, attacks by suspected ethnic militias accounted for the majority of reported fatalities.
The most common event type was protests, with 85 recorded events, followed by riots, with 71 events. ACLED records 78 incidents of civilian targeting during the reporting period. Rioters were involved in nearly half of these incidents.
In a recent review of overall police brutality in Kenya, the resutls were released, with some Kenyans hoping that their police will be on the receiving end of the same brutality they've inflicted on Kenyan citizens.
As one person pointed out on Twitter, "Kenyan Police brutality and poor human rights record could come to haunt them as they get the nod to deploy to the Gangland Republic of Haiti."
If Kenya fails in Haiti their track record will surely come into call, if they brutalize Haitians citizens the world will be watching as the United States searched high and low for a country to play their scapgoats. Greed on the part of President Williiam Ruto will come back to haunt him.His predecessor former President Kenyatta refused to take on the EU's option of housing migrants before the European Union went to Rwanda.
