DOWN COMES CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

racism today

Christopher Columbus lived during a time where racism was not heard of . Slavery was something that was the norm . It was not considered wrong at that time, it was just something that you did. Columbus is a very controversial part of history . It is said that one of the controversies was his treatment of the indigenous people, which where the Indians , he had as slaves, and the violence he shed on them. Others say he was a hero who set out to discover if the word was round and ,in his adventures accidentally discovered America. So was Columbus a hero or a villain, I don't really know. What I do know is that he is part of history. And that is what his statues symbolizes for me. History is very important. If we don't study it and learn from it , we are certain to repeat it.

I didn't live during the time of slavery. I didn't live during the time of the Civil Rights Movement, when black Americans fought so hard to get equal rights, during the 50 and 60's. As far as racism goes I can only go by what I have witnessed and have experienced in my own life. At the present time everything that is going on makes me sad. It seems we are not moving forward, we are moving backwards in time. To me it seems racism should be a thing of the past . We have learned enough from each other that at the very least we should all respect each other. We don't have to like each other, but respect each other as human beings and move forward.

All of this rioting and chaos started because of the killing of George Floyd . Something that never should have happened. Everybody can agree with that. Those 4 ex-police officers brought shame not only on themselves , but police officers across the country. That man was not resistant, there was no reason to have him in such a hold. He told all 4 of the officers he could not breath several times, and not one of them did anything about it. People who where sworn to protect did nothing to save that mans life, and to me that is just disgusting. It has been said that Derek Chauvin and George Floyd knew each other. That they had disagreements and bumped heads with each other a lot. So is what happened because of racism or was it personal. I believe it could have been a little of both. Those 4 officers will see their day in court and get the punishments that they so deserve.

People are angry and they want to see reform and change, I get that. There needs to be reform and change. But is causing riots, and burning up cities and, tearing up business really going to solve anything. Of course not. They are burning down their own neighborhoods, and destroying their own people's lively hoods. I don't really see a point to it. If you want your voice heard, there are right ways of getting that done. Destroying everything in your path makes you just as bad as everything else. What if we did in fact live in a world where everyone could respect each other. What kind of a world would that be. What if we lived in a world where racism and hate where a thing of the past. And respect and peace took over. We could shake each other's hand and live in harmony with each other. Would it not be nice that instead of tearing everything, down by violence or actions we could actually build each other up. Will this ever happen. I don't know, but it sure does sound good, to at least have respect for your fellow human beings.

That Christopher Columbus statue in Boston was beheaded before they took it down. To me that is a crime. It is vandalism. It is something that should be punished just like the 4 former police officers will be punished for their actions. And to add a personal note frankly I am growing tired of it. If you really want your voice heard. And if you really want to change the world , you have to appear better than what you are fighting against. If someone wants to change the world I say get to it. It only takes one voice to get people to listen. But saying you don't want violence and then acting out in violence wont work.
