Dear Donald Trump,

Of all the negative things people are saying about you and how much they hated what you did, I admit that of all the sins you committed and all the laws you broke, here is a startling fact. Among other things, you told about 30,000 lies and maybe more during your presidency.

Some of the lies I could detect myself for having lived through 13 United States Presidents including you, and I know some of the things that should have been done and some of the things that should have been left undone. Other lies have been fact-checked, and the number is unbelievable.

Number of Lies

The Washington Post reported in its Fact Checker column that you had already told 29,508 lies as of November 5, 2020. Since then, you told more because of the November 3 Presidential Election that you say was rigged. Even though the electoral votes weren't even close, you insisted that you won. You told that lie over and over again.

Considering your pattern, since you had told 29,508 by the beginning of November, it is not hard to believe that you told a total of 30,000 or more lies during your time in office. You will go down in the history books for having told more lies than any other United States President.

Perhaps the tally increased because after you told a lie and you were questioned about it, you told another lie to cover up the first lie.

Timeline of Lies

Actually, Mr. Trump, you began telling lies on June 16, 2015 when you announced your candidacy. The lies never stopped. You lied during your rallies, on Twitter, and during the debates with your opponent Joe Biden.

You ramped up your lies in October 2020 just before the election approached. You called the election "rigged" even before anyone voted. You said if you lost, it would be because of fraud. The fact-checkers reported that you lied 4,000 times in that month alone. On the eve of the election, you told a total of 504 lies in just 24 hours. Since the election, most of your lies were about election fraud.

Subjects of Most Lies

It has been recorded that many of the lies you told were unnecessary. For instance, you lied about the weather on your Inauguration Day on January 20, 2017. You said it did not rain. Anybody could see that it did rain. Why lie about something so insignificant?

More recently, you lied about something more serious. On February 26, 2020 in Washington, D.C. you stood with members of the coronavirus task force and told the American people that the virus was equivalent to the flu, the virus was "totally under control" and it was "disappearing." You emphasized that people didn't need to change much about their usual behavior. Since you told those lies, more than 397,000 Americans have died from the virus.

Other lies you told were about your approval ratings, how many people were at your rallies, and at other events. Those who have fact-checked your lies conclude that your most repeated lies are about the economy and jobs. In fact, 1 in every 5 lies was about those two issues.

Glenn Kessler, who edits The Washington Post Fact Checker column, noted that as time passed in your administration, your lies doubled what they were back in the early days of your presidency.

Before the lies about voter fraud and a rigged election, the most repeated lie was that your tax cut was the biggest in history, followed by your exaggerations of the size of United States trade deficits.

Final Words

Perhaps you will stop lying now that you can't tweet any longer or have large rallies. Then your nose will return to its normal position and will not grow longer as in the fictional story of Pinocchio whose nose grew every time he told a lie.

Mr. Trump, I believe this: "A lie can make its way around the world before the truth can tie up its shoes." Mr. Trump, tie up your shoes and let the truth come out. As I say goodbye to you, I also want to say goodbye to your lies.
