January 6th, 2021, was a dark day for the United States of America and a dark day for Democracy in the United States of America.

The "President" of the United States Donald John Trump, refused to admit defeat in the 2020 election to the now President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris.

Trump was so unwilling to admit defeat that he whipped up a mob of his most devoted followers to storm the Capitol Building where the Democratic process of asserting Joe Biden as President and Kamala Harris as Vice-President of the United States of America.

In short: Trump was willing to commit an act of terrorism, if not ignite Civil War 2 just so he could stay in power and further prove that America was never great.

His supporters were so convinced that the election of their glorious leader was stolen, that they were willing to murder Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schmuer, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez along with Republicans, including then Vice-President Mike Pence, who they were willing to hang on the so-called charges of treason.

Not only were the politicians being threatened that day by the mob, but so were the Capitol police.

Two of the Capitol Police officers Jeffrey Smith and Howard S. Liebengood committed suicide after the attack. Two more officers Gunther Hashida and Kyle Defrietag also committed suicide six months after the attack. Officer Brian D. Sicknick was attacked and killed during the event by the mob. (2)

Fortunately, during the chaos a heroic police officer by the name of Eugene Goodman was able to lead the insurrectionists away from the Senate chamber, thus saving the lives of the many politicians.

One member of the mob who goes by the name Jerry (he didn't want his last name published because he didn't want to be targeted by liberals) was quoted saying "Of course!" exclaims one such believer from Wisconsin named Jerry. "There's just there's no way [Biden] got 81 million votes. It's not possible."(1)

After the event many Republicans like Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley and Matt Gaetz glorified that horrific day (and still do), while still remaining committed to the big lie that the election was stolen by the Democrats. The very same Big Lie that provoked the incident of January 6th, 2021.

The hearing itself

The Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol began on June 9th, 2022.

Republicans and other Trump loyalists have been like Kevin McCarthy have been in opposition to the forming of such a committee, claiming it as a partisan plot by the Democrats.

(3)"Unless Speaker Pelosi reverses course and seats all five Republican nominees, Republicans will not be party to their sham process and will instead pursue our own investigation of the facts," McCarthy said.

McConnell was in opposition at first, but now supports it.

(4) “I think the fact-finding is interesting. We’re all going to be watching it,” McConnell said. “It was a horrendous event, and I think what they’re seeking to find out is something the public needs to know.”

Those who worked with Trump like Steve Bannon, Peter Navrro and Dan Scavino have been subpoenaed by Congress to testify but have ignored such subpoenas and are currently being charged with contempt of Congress.

A trial for Steve Bannon is being set for July 18 of this year.

The Committee

The committee hearing is on its fifth day.

The witnesses are former Department of Justice officials Former acting Attorney General Jefferey Rosen and Former acting Assistant Attorney General Richard Donoghue.

(5)"Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen," Trump told the two men, according to their testimony."

"The President said 'Suppose I do this. Suppose I replace him, Jeff Rosen, with him, Jeff Clark. What do you do?' And I said 'Sir, I would resign immediately. There is no way I'm serving one minute under this guy, Jeff Clark,'" Donoghue said in a piece of video testimony played at Tuesday's hearing."(5)

Other testimony in hearings involved election official Wandrea ArShaye "Shaye" Moss, whose life has been affected by the threats made against he

“It’s turned my life upside down. I no longer give out my business card,” she said. “I don’t want anyone knowing my name. I don’t want to go anywhere with my mom because she might yell my name out over the grocery aisle or something. I don’t go to the grocery store at all. I haven’t been anywhere at all. I gained about 60 pounds. I just don’t do nothing anymore; I don’t want to go anywhere. I second-guess everything I do.

“It’s affected my life in a major way. In every way. All because of lies.”(6)

The Committee was supposed to be scheduled to continue hearings on July 11th, but the Committee itself suddenly assembled due to recently obtained evidence concerning the 1/6 incident from Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

"During one hearing last week, the committee played video clips of Hutchinson testifying that Meadows and Rudy Giuliani were involved in discussions about putting forward illegitimate slates of electors. In another interview shown, Hutchinson named several Republican lawmakers who she said all sought pardons following the attack on the Capitol: Representatives Louie Gohmert of Texas, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Mo Brooks of Alabama, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, and Andy Biggs of Arizona.

Hutchinson also confirmed to the panel, the Washington Post reported, that Meadows said Trump allegedly demonstrated support for protesters who were shouting, “Hang Mike Pence!” And in a federal filing, she told congressional investigators that Meadows was warned before the insurrection about the threat of violence “as supporters of Trump planned to mass” at the Capitol, the Post reported."(7)

It was even said in her testimony that Trump was so furious at Bill Barr that he threw his lunch at the wall.

The Fate of Democracy hangs in the Balance.

The events following January 6th were clear that some politicians would rather betray the country and let a tyrant run the country rather than have a President that the people can choose from to allow to come power.

The opposition to the formation of the Committee by those who are "loyal" to former "President" of the United States and continue to hold on to the Big Lie, is proof that American politics is toxic and needs to be relooked at before American citizens like myself can take such matters seriously.

The fact that there is a committee to hold the former "President" accountable is proof that some politicians would prefer a Democracy rather than an authoritarian regime run by someone is who constantly at war with reality and can't handle being told no.

The real question that is probably on the minds of many Americans is the same question I put to you the reader.

When the Committee Hearings have concluded; Will we as a nation still have a Democracy?
