Chinese Billionaire Justin Sun Breaks Up With Girlfriend During Surrogacy Procedure

Because AI chatbot Claude told him to

There is a specific brand of madness that occurs when you give a young man billions of dollars before his brain has fully finished developing, and Justin Sun β€” the founder of the cryptocurrency network TRON β€” is the newest example.

Sun has recently revealed that he broke up with his girlfriend, the famous Chinese actress Jing Tian, because an AI chatbot told him to.

Let us look at the facts.

The couple was on the 8th day of the egg retrieval procedure β€” the initial medical step required to harvest the genetic material before any surrogacy could begin.

It was at this exact moment, right before the eggs were retrieved, that the actress demanded US$50 million.

Rather than doing what any normal, emotionally functioning human would do β€” which is to say, having a furious, tear-stained argument over the kitchen table or booking a marriage counselor β€” Sun decided to copy-paste his relationship anxieties into Claude, his AI chatbox of choice.

He asked for an objective risk assessment. The algorithm, which possesses all the empathy of a digital spreadsheet, flagged a fifty-million-dollar demand as an β€œemotional and financial red flag.” It concluded that the relationship lacked mutual trust and advised immediate termination.

And Justin Sun, a man who has outsourced his entire existence to the internet, simply said, β€œAI says no,” and dumped her.

He then swiftly filed a lawsuit in a Xi’an court to claw back a US$4.5 million marriage gift.

Whether Jing Tian’s version of events will ultimately match Sun’s is, of course, a matter for the law courts and the court of Chinese social media, both of which are currently hard at work.

A History of Doing Things Entirely for Attention

Sun’s career has been a sustained experiment in the limits of attention economics. He is a man who treats reality not as an experience to be lived, but as a series of publicity stunts to be financed.

Consider, for instance, the infamous Warren Buffett lunch incident. In 2019, Sun shelled out a record-breaking US$4.57 million in a charity auction to have a nice steak and a chat with Buffett, the legendary investor and noted cryptocurrency skeptic (who once accurately described Bitcoin as β€œrat poison squared”).

The stage was set for a clash of financial philosophies. Instead, just three days before the event, Sun ghosted the elderly billionaire.

The Overpriced Fruit and the Void of Meaning

In late 2024, Sun walked into a Sotheby’s auction and paid US$6.2 million for a banana duct-taped to a wall. This was Comedian, a conceptual artwork by Maurizio Cattelan. Let’s be completely clear: Sun did not buy a magical, immortal banana. He paid over six million dollars for a roll of tape, a certificate of authenticity, and a piece of fruit that had been purchased earlier that morning from an Upper East Side vendor for 35 cents.

What did he do with this modern artwork? He held a press conference in Hong Kong, peeled the banana off the wall, and ate it in front of the world’s media, declaring it was β€œmuch better than other bananas.”

Whether he is buying groceries for the price of a superyacht, backing out of a multi-million-dollar lunch, or letting a line of code dissolve his family plans, Justin Sun remains a blinding reminder that having unlimited money does not prevent you from being entirely at the mercy of your own bizarre impulses.
