In this article, I’ll show you how to make a free NFT. It’s easier than you may think to make, or’mint,' an NFT, and so’s just as easy to do it for free. I’ll be concentrating on generating a single NFT artwork in this tutorial rather than minting generative NFTs or an NFT collection. So, what exactly are NFTs? These non-fungible tokens have swept the globe, but they're not quite as complicated as they appear. NFTs are a method of registering a digital file on a cryptocurrency blockchain to ensure that it is a one-of-a-kind object and to demonstrate ownership. We have a complete guide on how to produce and sell an NFT, but I'll teach you how to make one for free right now.

NFTs can be transformative for artists since they allow them to own their digital creation, sell it, and even receive a percentage of future sales. Tina Ziegler, an art curator, discusses International Women's Day and World of Women NFTs in my interview, explaining how significant NFTs can be for artists.

How to make an NFT for free: a step-by-step guide

1.Creating a cryptocurrency wallet account is the first step.

To create your NFT, you'll need a bitcoin wallet to create an account on any NFT marketplace. Metamask is the one we've chosen because it's one of the most frequently utilized and accessible. Alternatives exist, such as the Coinbase wallet.

You'll be given a 12-word'seed phrase' when you create your wallet account, which will serve as your unique password. The seed phrase serves as your security code, so keep it safe and don't share it (handy if you forget your password).

2.Creating an account on an NFT exchange

I'm going to make an account on Rarible for this tutorial, but the process is the same for any NFT marketplace. To choose the right NFT marketplace for you, read my guide to the greatest NFT marketplaces.

Following the instructions, link your Metamask account to your Rarible account after you've set up our account (adding a user name, photo, bio, and so on). When you link your two accounts, your NFTs will show in your wallet and all transactions will be completed quickly (you'll need to go into Metamask's settings to have your NFTs automatically brought in). My Metamask account also serves as a login for Rarible.

Personalize your NFT marketplace account by uploading a banner image and connecting your social network accounts.

3.Creating some artwork

I quickly created a fresh piece of art for this article on how to make an NFT for free. I use the painting software Rebelle 5 to sketch some random photo references; it's quick, and I'm not focused on detail but rather a basic sense of the face and proportions. (Read my Rebelle 5 review for additional information on this fantastic digital art program.)

An NFT may be any digital file, so make whatever art you like, but I'm going with a digital painting. I save the new artwork as a jpg before uploading it to my new NFT marketplace account and minting it as an NFT.

4.Adding your artwork to the sitesite

It's time to upload my artwork and start making a free NFT. Rarible and other NFT markets have highly user-friendly tutorials for uploading your art, and the process is essentially the same (some select NFT marketplaces may want verify you, and this can take a few days). Continue by clicking the Create tab in the top right corner of your account.

You'll need to pick a blockchain immediately. There are four options available on Rarible, including the new low-carbon cryptos Flow, Tezos, and Polygon. (To help you pick which NFT crypto is right for you, we offer a must-read guide to the most popular NFT crypto.) I chose Ethereum to construct a free NFT.

5.Selecting a free minting option

Choose Single to generate a one-of-a-kind NFT or Multiple to mint a series of NFTs to establish a collection from the following alternatives to assist you decide on the value and type of NFT you're making. (Inspiration can be found in my NFT trends section.) Set the price, give it a name and a description, and make sure Free Minting is turned on.

Free minting, also known as lazy minting, allows you to pass on the cost of minting to the buyer and avoid being charged. To mint an NFT, you're usually charged 'gas fees,' which are the costs of transacting on the blockchain. A 'Gwei' is a gas measurement unit. The charge might increase or decrease depending on the amount of traffic on the blockchain when you're minting; the more traffic, the higher the cost. It is frequently less expensive in the late evening or early morning.

But… If I select Free Minting, I will not be charged. The disadvantage of passing on the gas costs to the buyer is that you may need to drop your asking price to account for the additional costs, or you may need to issue your NFT as an auction and let the buyer decide.

6.The NFT has been created.

When the NFT is minted on Rarible, a magnificent explosion of digital confetti appears. The real labor now begins. It's best to get on social media as soon as possible and announce your new NFT. From the NFT marketplace, you may connect the new NFT to Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms.

You see, minting an NFT for free is simple, but there are a few things to keep in mind. The benefit of free minting is that it allows you to quickly create an NFT for no cost, but it can also have drawbacks because NFT marketplaces tend to make 'normal' NFTs more visible. As a result, you'll need to create more of your own social media platforms to promote yourself.

How to make a free NFT: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a blockchain, exactly?

This is a database that is shared among computer network nodes. Each block in the chain contains data, which is checked and updated on a regular basis. Any assets on the blockchain become immutable as a result, making data extremely difficult to alter or erase. There is no third-party involvement in these decentralised networks, and all data is freely available for viewing and tracking.

What gives an NFT value?

The rarity and/or status of an NFT contribute to its value. As a result, an NFT created by well-known artists like Beeple, Damien Hirst, and Takashi Murakami will be extremely valuable.

NFTs, on the other hand, defy the rules. Fresh artists are coming up with new techniques to distinguish NFTs from typical art appraisals. A crucial component is community and utility. Consider an NFT like the Bored Ape Yacht Club to be a ticket to a club, with exclusive events, chat groups, and projects to participate in; these community-driven NFTs are extremely valuable.

Why is an NFT JPG so valuable?

An NFT jpeg is so valuable because it’s the hash token on the blockchain that’s being purchased, not the jpeg itself. The Crypto Punk art is a visually appealing 'thing,' but the ultimate worth of the NFT is its token and the benefits that being on a blockchain can provide. This could involve invitations to special in-person events.

How much does an NFT set you back?

If you employ lazy minting, it can be free. The cost of gas fees to develop and register on a blockchain varies widely for standard NFTs, and the cost grows and lowers as the blockchain is used. A standard NFT might cost anything between $10 and $170. We’ve heard of fees as high as $2,000 / £1,700.

What types of NFTs are the most popular?

Because they embrace the complete functioning of the blockchain, NFTs with usefulness will always sell well. As a result, the NFTs listed below are among the most popular.

1. Bored Ape Yacht Club

2. CryptoPunks

3. The Sandbox

4. Art Blocks

5. Doodles

6. Cool Cats

7. Decentraland

8. World of Women

Is it possible to avoid paying gas fees without utilizing lazy minting?

Yes, to some extent. You can select the gas cost maximum you’ll pay to mint an NFT on newer NFT crypto blockchains like Wax. It will be processed and minted when the gas fee reaches the amount you specify. Also, avoid minting an NFT on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as these are traditionally the busiest and most expensive days.
