Take a Look at Your Health Through a New Lens

Time to pay attention to eye health

With everything going on in the world many of us have decided to take control of the things that we can, including our health. One aspect of health many neglect is eye health. That’s what Juliette Nelson of NURILENS is looking to change.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Diabetic retinopathy affects nearly 7.7 million Americans age 40 and older.

The number of people in the United States with diabetes is increasing. More than 29 million Americans have diabetes. About 27% of those with diabetes—8.1 million Americans—do not know they have the disease. It can lead to eye damage before many even get a diagnosis.

In addition to diabetes there are many other things that cause eye damage. Digital devices are everywhere today. With computers and smartphones as fixtures of our lives at home, work and school, we spend more time with screens than ever before. Virtual learning and zoom calls have been a big part of many of our lives in recent years. News reports about blue light, computer eye strain and “digital detox” offer varied recommendations for screen use. Since many of us cannot avoid this increased screen time, blue light blocking glasses like the ones offered by NURILENS are necessary to protect our eyes.

NURILENS is a Black woman-owned company that strives to create a seamless and long-lasting customer optical experience for diverse audiences that encourages self-expression and the pursuit of vision. They do this by combining style, sustainability, and affordability with their handcrafted wooden eyewear.

Juliette Nelson, Founder of NURILENS

•Tell us a little about you.

Juliette: I am an industrial-organizational psychology professional (by day), published author, and entrepreneur (by night) that is just passionate about living life with purpose and empowering others to do the same. In all that I do, I strive to encourage people to step out as their best authentic selves and strive to make an impact wherever they go.

•Tell us a little about your brand.

Juliette: NURILENS is a handcrafted wooden eyewear company with blue-light blocking solutions in our eyeglasses. As a black, female, Caribbean-owned brand, NURILENS glasses are a tool by which we encourage self-expression, celebrate identity and self to empower people to See through the Lens of their Purpose.

•When people think of eye safety they typically think of safety goggles. Tell us the importance of protecting your eyes in other ways.

Juliette: I think it’s a normal thing to get caught in the hustle and bustle of life without realizing all of the things that could be damaging to our eyes. From cooking to cutting the grass, and spending the day in front of a TV, computer, tablet, or phone screen, there is so much wear and tear on our eyes especially when we don’t take enough precautions. For many of us, especially during COVID, electronic screens became a larger part of our everyday lives. Too much consumption of that could lead to digital eye syndrome and impact our sleeping patterns. Protecting our eyes by looking away from our screens every so often (20-20-20 rule), maintaining a healthy diet, getting a routine eye exam, and using blue-light blocking tools can all support healthy vision.

•Why would your products make an amazing gift?

Juliette: NURILENS eyeglasses make a great gift simply because they’re a work of art and a statement piece. By purchasing a pair of frames or gift card for a friend, associate, or loved one, you’re joining us in our challenge toward our customers to See through the Lens of their Purpose and to stay focused on their vision and goals, and stay true to their best authentic selves on their journey to achieving their purpose.

•What’s your best-selling product?

Juliette: Our best seller is the Montego Bay and 1804 frames. Both products are named after Montego Bay, Jamaica, and 1804, the year Haiti gained its freedom and became the first independent black republic around the world. Aside from the fact that both designs are show stoppers, a lot of customers appear to identify and relate to either the name of the frames or their meaning.
