Pinterest is not a social media. It is a search engine. The significant uptakes in the frequency of certain keyword searches means that new trends are on the rise. Many Pinterest users use the site to search for fashion inspiration, be it upcoming trends or ways to style a knee-length boot, and it is no secret that fashion is fickle. Yes, it is cyclic, but it is also ever evolving, styles go in and out of fashion all the time. You might want to conform and blend in with the masses or stick out and establish yourself as a fashionable outcast this coming year. Either way, take the time and check out trend predictions for 2023 according to Pinterest.

Sci-fi Outfits

Think of your favourite cyberpunk movie or a Netflix show with a futuristic aesthetic. Thought of one? Now take a look at the costume design and you will have a pretty good idea of what this trend looks like. Fashion lovers frequently take inspiration from cinematic masterpieces, and this dystopian sci-if/cyberpunk style reflects the current times as well. Dark. Moody. And a tad scary. Watch the original Bladerunner and Bladerunner 2049, Altered Carbon, Tron: Legacy and Ghost in the Shell to channel this aesthetic.

Sheer and Airy

For nearly two years we have been opting for loungewear and prioritizing comfort in an attempt to stay sane during multiple Covid-19 lockdowns. In 2023, however, a new era of sheer fabrics and flowy silhouettes will emerge. Body-baring pieces will be one of manifestations of empowerment in the face of adversity. The trend is not gender exclusive, so regardless of your gender identity, try and play around with lace, tulle and shimmer next year. Do not be afraid to show some skin through a gauzy blouse, make the passers by look twice when you layer a sheer skirt. Go on Pinterest and search up the key words to find relevant runway looks or the ways fashion influencers style their delicate feminine pieces to be submerged in this airy vibe.

Probably the easiest style to adopt next year. Just rewatch the classics like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” or “Bridget Jones’s Diary” for easy inspiration and channel your inner Regina George or Cher Horowitz to achieve that nostaglia-inducing look. Think claw clips, tube tops, slip dresses and kitten heels. You can either completely submerge yourself in this aesthetic or throw in a few modern touches here and there to make the outfits more fun. Dealer‘s choice. Take a look at the relevant Pinterest searches I have listed below to make your search for inspiration easier.

And remember…

All these trends and every other trend you might have heard of (for this coming year or ever, really) are just suggestions. Stick to your personal style, do not fall prey to micro trends and instead just incorporate a few trendy pieces here and there, but only if it feels right. Prioririze your own comort and dress in pieces that make you feel truly confident.

“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.” - Gianni Versace

That‘s a wrap! Draw on these trends for inspiration and have fun playing dress up in 2023!
