Adding Leather Accessories to Your Wardrobe

Make Your Wardrobe Stylish After Adding Leather Accessories

In the world of fashion, leather is a very unique material, as it can run the gamut from edgy to classy, and everything in-between. For example, incorporating some subtle leather accessories like watch straps, shoes, belts, or bags into your wardrobe can really add a sophisticated aesthetic to a business casual look, while wearing leather pants and jackets gives more of an edgy vibe that’s often associated with more of a rocker or biker style.

Of course, fashion choices are very personal, and there’s no right or wrong way to wear leather. That said, it’s easy to go too far with leather if you’re not careful! Here are some of the best leather accessories to consider as you venture into new style territories.

1. Watch Bands

One of the best ways to add some leather to your look is to acquire a stylish watch with an attractive leather band. Watches are quite versatile, and they can really tie an outfit together. As you shop around for a new timepiece, be sure to consider your usual attire and select something simple and complementary — you don’t want to end up with a watch that only works with one look!

A sleek, black strap with crocodile embossing is a bold style choice, while a brown, minimalist leather strap is a more conservative option. Spend some time exploring luxury watch brands to get a feel for which style is ideal for your typical look.

Buying a new watch isn’t the only way to add a touch of leather to your wristwear. If you already own a watch, it might be easier (and cheaper) to just upgrade its strap. You can even incorporate leather Apple watch bands if you prefer the modern look and functionality of your smartwatch.

2. Footwear

A high-quality pair of leather shoes or boots can really elevate an outfit, as long as you style the right pieces in the right ways. For example, Chelsea boots can look quite dressy paired with contemporary business attire, but the same exact boots could work very well with streetwear accessories like a vintage leather jacket, a wide-brimmed hat, slim-cut jeans, and some studs or hoop earrings.

On the other hand, not all leather shoes and boots are as versatile as Chelsea boots. A pair of Oxfords will look superb with a suit and tie, but they would look downright silly with jeans and a tee. Similarly, those moto boots that look incredible with your favorite jeans may look out of place with an evening cocktail dress.

When you choose leather footwear, make sure the style fits the rest of your clothes and accessories, otherwise, they’re going to feel forced. When it comes to leather, a little goes a long way, and if you’re not styling your whole, overall look, it’s all too easy for it to look out of place.

3. Belts

Like boots, the belt you choose should align with the overall outfit. As a general rule, match your leather belt to your leather footwear (and ideally your watch band and other leather accessories, too). Be sure to also consider how formal the belt is. If you enjoy wearing vintage clothing, a well-worn cowhide belt with a unique patina and large buckle could really add a fun touch to your go-to blue jeans, but the same belt could look awkward with khakis and a sweater.

4. Bags

A high-quality leather shoulder bag or purse is an accessory that will provide years of enjoyment, especially if you commute or travel on a regular basis. Compared to the leather accessories mentioned above, you have a bit more stylistic freedom with your bag. After all, matching your bag to every outfit isn’t practical. Something with a neutral tone and pattern is going to be most versatile, but don’t be afraid to choose something with a little more personality.

5. Wallets

Like bags, wallets are a very personal choice, and function typically takes priority over fashion. After all, most people aren’t ever going to see your wallet. That’s why wallets are a great starting point for anyone who’s new to the material. If you end up falling in love with your leather wallet, you can explore other leather accessories that are more visible. Just make sure you invest in a quality wallet that won’t fall apart after a few months.

Quality Is Key

Leather can age like a fine wine or a glass of milk, depending on its quality. Spending the extra money on high-grade leather is absolutely worth it, as the leather will become soft and sumptuous over time, and will develop a unique patina that gives the piece some character. Conversely, low-grade leather will degrade and become brittle quite quickly.

In the long run, you’ll end up saving money by purchasing quality leather goods, as you won’t need to replace them for a long time, if ever. Invest in quality leather accessories, and style them cautiously at first while you find your footing. Once you’re comfortable with small amounts of leather, consider making the jump to a leather jacket or even leather pants. Remember — confidence is the best fashion accessory of all!
