5 Things Every Man Should Have in His Closet

No matter what your origin, your job, age, or style is there are some pieces of clothing that every man simply must have in his closet.

These are the things that create the backbone of your wardrobe and that give you something to wear no matter what the occasion. So, if you don’t already have them, here’s what you need to get.

Denim jeans

If you’re someone who always wears proper pants and thinks you’re never going to need a pair of jeans, you’ll be very unpleasantly surprised the next time you’re invited to a casual house party or a morning walk in the park. Dark wash jeans are the easiest thing to dress up and down, and simply throwing them on with a T-shirt will give you an everyday, casual look, while a button-down will make you ready to attend a night out or a second date. Go for a slim or straight fit, as skinny jeans can look too casual.

Casual jacket

Sure, you should own a coat, but more often than not, you’re going to need a good jacket for everyday wear. You can choose something like a leather jacket for an edgier look, or you can go for a black windbreaker, but you’ll need something that will dress down a look when you don’t want to look too fancy. It will go great with the aforementioned jeans, but you can also wear it with a more professional look to dress it down. It’s the perfect accessory if you live in a town like London, where the weather can be unpredictable and you need something in the boot of your car to be on top of the situation.

Suit

No man is complete without a good suit. You’ll want to do some research and find a type of suit that will fit you best and that you will feel good and confident in. Make sure you’re taking into consideration your location, as suits made for cooler climates will be made of sturdier, thicker materials, while tailored suits in Sydney will be made of more breathable material to match the warmer days. You also want to make sure that, if you have only one suit, it’s versatile enough to be worn to different occasions, so go for tan or navy before black.

Good shoes

Many people have said that all you need to know about a man, you can learn from his shoes. If you don’t know how to match your shoes with your outfit, if you don’t know how to care for them, and which socks to wear with them, it means that your mom probably still dresses you. So, get a good pair of leather or pleather lace-up shoes and make sure you keep up with cleaning and polishing them so that they are always in good condition.

Pullover

For the casual days, you want to have something that will still show class and style, but be casual enough for a morning at your gram’s. A V-neck pullover is a great option for that—it works with a shirt underneath, of course, and if you go for a solid, neutral color, you’ll be able to wear it with whatever you choose. If you don’t feel like layering, go for a closed neckline and wear it on its own, but understand that you are limiting your fashion options by doing that.

Nobody is saying that you’re less of a man if you can’t afford the nice shoes and cashmere jumper, but these five things should be on the top of your shopping list, because if you have nothing but them —you’ll still be able to dress up and look good every day.
