The ultimate cold weather staple for anyone wanting something warmer than a denim jacket but more casual than a coat, the puffer jacket is the investment item to look out for.

You’d be fascinated to know that this style piece that has been worn across catwalks and the streets alike was actually first invented in Australia. The puffer jacket, initially known as a down jacket (coming from the word eiderdown), was designed by mountaineer George Finch. After being (controversially) invited to a British alpine expedition, Finch designed the jacket which caught the fascination of his British counterparts.

No, it wasn’t Eddie Baeur, a Washington adventurer, but a war hero and long-haired colonial, George Finch. Whilst perhaps Bauer brought it into the mainstream, I’m letting the Aussies claim this one.

Alright, enough history.

Back to this style piece that you need to get your hands on (if you haven’t already).

It’s an item that is equal parts cosy, athleisure and almost battle-like. You have the feeling that if someone wanted to punch you in the guts, you have all this puffy material in the way that would reduce the blow, right? No? Just me.

Okie dokie. So how can you style this piece?

As always, find a piece that you feel incredible in. Don’t get something just because everyone else is wearing it. If a basic black North Face jacket is too mundane for you, get a bright puffer jacket that suits your personality more. If a bright orange puffer seems like your worst nightmare and brings back memories of your childhood where your mum dressed you in the most vibrant colour to make sure people knew where you were in a crowd, then get something more toned down.

Obviously, opt for something you can afford, but if you have a couple of spare bucks, I highly recommend investing in a versatile piece (or do your research and find a jacket that is great quality and is in the style you want).

1. ATHLEISURE

Who says athleisure needs to be lycra and coffee runs? Match your puffer jacket with a comfy pair of high-waisted leggings, matching crop top/sports bra (and basic or graphic tee of your choice- depending on the weather), crew socks (from your favourite brand for extra character) and a pair of your favourite sneakers. A pair of cat-eye glasses and a chic bag will finish off the look. You can tie your hair in a low bun with some loose strands to shape your face, or alternatively, you can leave your hair down and pop on your favourite beanie!

2. Street chic

One of my favourite looks for a puffer jacket is matching it with a fierce, chic streetwear inspired outfit. Grab a pair of cargo pants with tapered ankles, a basic tank and your favourite chunky boot. You can opt for any old pair of cargo pants, but I find the tapered ankles help create a billowy look. Pull your hair back into a sleek low bun with a middle part, add either a bumbag or crossbody bag with a chain, and match it with your favourite stand-out jewellery. I particularly love this whole look in black as it makes me feel like I’ve got it all together and a total badass. If you want to make the look a little more formal, switch up the cargo pants with a mean pair of skinny jeans that are super stylish and comfortable.

3. Rip it up

Another favourite look of mine is matching a puffer jacket with your ripped jeans, sporty graphic tee with your favourite NBA team and your favourite pair of sneakers. Match it with a colourful bag and rectangular glasses and you’re all set! It’s comfy. It’s a way to express your character. It’s a versatile look that has a basic foundation prompting an endless amount of looks. If you’re not a huge fan of graphic tees, a basic tank or bodysuit can give the outfit a refined, sexy look. I also love matching it with a high-neck, long sleeve knit top too! Sometimes less really can be more.

I’m always fascinated by pieces that once started as a looked-over item of clothing that was more functional than fashionable being turned into style staples. It’s like a character arc, but for fashion.
